It’s Official: Feely Will Kick vs. New England

Posted by Randy Lange on September 10, 2008 – 10:33 am

In his housekeeping remarks at the top of his news conference today, head coach Eric Mangini announced what has been reported elsewhere, that the Jets have signed former Falcons, Giants and Dolphins kicker Jay Feely to their active roster.

"I think Jay’s been very efficient," Mangini said of Feely’s NFL career, now entering its eighth season. "He was very efficient last year [with Miami] in terms of field goals and does a nice job with kickoffs. He has a lot of experience. All those things came into play."

Not the least of which was Feely’s experience as the Giants’ kicker in 2005-06.

"That was definitely a positive," Mangini said of Feely’s Meadowlands exposure, "having that understanding of the uniqueness of the stadium, the wind shifts, the weather conditions … yeah, that’s definitely a plus."

Feely hit a 53-yard field goal in last season’s game vs. the Jets at Miami, the longest by an opposing kicker in five years. He never missed a kick against the Jets, going 4-for-4 in FGs and 3-for-3 in PATs in two games. For his career he’s an 80.4 percent FG kicker over (185-for-230) with a decent 44.4 percent accuracy from 50-plus (8-for-18).

And in the Meadowlands, mostly kicking for the Giants in 2005-06, Feely is about the same, 33-for-41 (80.5 percent) on FGs and 2-for-4 from 50-plus.

Mangini confirmed Feely will be the kicker for the sore-thighed Mike Nugent on Sunday vs. New England. Asked how long Feely will be the kicker, the coach replied: "Until Mike gets back … I’m not sure."

To make room for Feely on the roster, the Jets waived rookie LB Kenwin Cummings. The team also made four practice squad transactions: Signed were TE Brad Listorti, a spring minicamp invitee who was released by Atlanta, and OL Stefan Rodgers, a final cut by Philadelphia. Released were OL Stanley Daniels and WR Larry Brackins.

Mangini also talked about the Patriots and the challenges involved in facing Matt Cassel at quarterback instead of Tom Brady. Eric Allen will have a news story on the QB picture for Sunday’s home opener this afternoon.

Randy, Too bad they let Cummings go. I thought he showed enough this summer to keep him around. I just hope nobody picks him up. You can rest assured that he is probably already on his way up I 95 North to the Pats. They need young LB’s. Feely was a good p/u and will hold the fort until Nugent returns. GO JETS!!!!

I dont want to get ahead of myself but I think we had a shot at the Pats with Brady. Now I think all we have to do is not make mistakes and beat our self.

i dont see challenges facing Matt Cassel his last stsrt was H.S fr pete sake but i do see the pats front 7 being the xfactor we need to get on them from the start and not let up until we leave them guessing themselves NE drives on that us against them mentality and we need to knock that thought into there reality and kick big bros #@#@ at home leaving them to go home rejected and losers GO NY.JETS

HOW THE HELL did he waive Cummings, are you kidding me.That guy is better than our #1 pick.NE is gonna pounce on him if he gets that far.Parcells will probably get him first!Maybe they made a deal with him not to sign with anybody but I cant see Belicheck not capitalizing on this and pumping him for info. Not happy man,NOT HAPPY.

The JETS have to beat the Pats this week. The football gods have set things up for the JETS to beat the Pats this week at home. The pressure is on. GO JETS!!!!

Im surprised to read they cut Cummings, he should at least be put on the practice squad.

I CAN SEE THE JET GOING UNDEFETED UP T THEIR BYE WEEK 4-0.
    HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY.
1- IN WEEK 2 WE PLAY THE PATS AND THEY LOST BRADY
2- IN WEEK 3 WE PLAY THE CHARGERS AND THEY LOST MERRMAN
3- IN WEEK 4 WE PLAY THE CARDS AND WE SHOULD RUN THEM OVER
THE JETS HAVE A REAL CHANCE!!!!!!!

Lets go jets this week. Now we can prove to the rest of the league that we are not a team to be messed with

Let’s not kid anybody. To say the jets will be 4-0 going ino their bye week is rediculous. They certainly have a chance. Week 2: Brady is out, but the patriots os a supberb defense that will give our offense fits. Another week of preperation is a plus. Week 3: THE CHARGRS! Certainly not a gimme game. Defense will have to play well, it will be a shoot-out. Week 4: Cardinals: This will be

The Jets looked awful against the Dolphins. Do you really think the Patriots even without Brady are going to lose this game? Pats- 24…J-e-t-s- 17

With the addition of a kicker who can now get the ball past the opposing teams 40 yd line this week will hopefully be better able to control the game than we did against the Fins. We now will learn 1 of 2 things (1) Brady isn’t superman, he just has the best supporting cast and any QB with that support will put up numbers or (2) without Brady, the PATS are not the same. Which will it be?

  12. By Ray on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

I’m a little surprised that Cummings was the one to go too, but better than our #1 pick? Get a grip.

  13. By CEB on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

Releasing Cummings is a surprise. This guy is simply a player. Given the jump in level and change of position, let alone great instincts and relentless pursuit, good speed and excellent tackling skills he is only going to improve, perhaps very significantly in the pros. He may be one of those players that is actually a better pro than college player a potentially a key contributor. Get him back!!!

Cotchery is at his best against NE and has established himself as Farve’s big play goto guy so I expect to see something nice coming out of those 2 Sunday.Cotchery amazes me how he always stays on his feet while catching tough passes with guys draped all over him.For some reason defenders try to throw him down but they throw him foward and he stays on his feet.It must be a Jet Fourth Round Thing!

I believe the Jets could be a competitive team. It will take all 53 players and
coaching staff working together. Being from Wisconsin , Brett adds a threat
everytime he touches the ball. I would like to see a double tight end formation
using Keller and Franks or Baker. This cold give any defense fits. The defensive needs to continue to improve with the vets and rookies. Go Jets!

Here we go again, exposing young players to the rest of the league. That’s why WARD and WARE are RB’s with the Giants, while we search for RB’s. They also had excellent training camps and were exposed. Why are we keeping 2 kickers? You protect your players by putting Nugent on IR. Feely will do so good that he won’t be cut. I don’t understand this team, at times.

  17. By Wayne on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

So happy that we signed Feeley. I liked him a lot better than Nugent & Jets should keep him & cut Nugent. I agree with others that cutting Cummings is a huge mistake. Beat NE this weekend Jets. The door is wide open. Come out & take no prisoners, go for the jugular and don’t let up. Go Jets!!!!!!!!!!11

I can’t wait until Sunday. We built a D to put pressure on the QB. We need to come after him hard, no letting up and no prevent d PLEASE. I would be fine with giving up the occasional deep play to stop the run and pressure the QB the whole game. I don’t even see this one being close unless we turn the ball over. Jets 31 Pats 13.

  19. By Christopher on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

Should have released Nugent not Cummings, stupid move. Nobody would pick up a hurt kicker. Plus he doesn’t know our offense or defense’s plays. Feely is probably an upgrade to Nugent anyway.

  20. By Hogan on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

I also Dont see why Nuge didnt go on IR. Cummings is def going to be snatched, most likely by a division rival.

  21. By Ira on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

While i think Feely was a good p/u until we see what happens with Nugent. Nobody has questioned why he was signed by the Chiefs and cut the next day. What was up with that?

  22. By poobah on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

guys, what’s the quickest way to hear about whether cummings passed waivers or what we did with the practice squad. randy? the suspense is killin’ me! my god, how will i wait all the way to sunday for the game?!?

  23. By MikeMc on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

Well at least Pats fan has it close & jet$fan#1 is a little optimistic, I agree with Ira, we need to be patient, this will take some time, as long as we get better each week we have a good chance at making some noise.

poobah, sorry to hear about the anxiety issues. You can check nfl.com or kffl.com, a great service for NFL news. And I promise to pass on any information I have as soon as I can.

I hope they don’t cut this guy when nugent gets better. Didn’t we learn we need more then one kicker. This guy should be always an arms reach away. I mean I’m not saying we don’t have to get rid of him he is a pretty good kicker and as long as I saw what I saw on Sunday we need two.

Mike Mc pats fan close. come on the pats struggeled to get that win against KC the dolphins had great field position from the start we still held them not to mention some bad calls kept them hanging around and for IRA this is not baseball 169 games we dont have to much time 15wks JETS brass neeeds to grow killer instincts pats bills are not lying down to uswe need to suffucate them and fast

Randy why did we sign this new te when we could of signed Jason Pociask

  28. By Drew on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

Ira…I asked Randy on Monday if he knew what happened with Feely and KC. A KC paper stated that Feely came off the plane and went right to the practice field to compete with Nick Novak and Connor Barth. He hit 23 of 30 and they were 28 of 30. Feely’s agent was not very happy and thought the Chiefs wasted their time. Feely thought he only kicked okay but assumed he would have had a larger tryout

  29. By Drew on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

What happens to Nugent if Feely comes in and kicks lights out for 3 weeks?? The guy has a track record of making alot of kicks and he has a big leg on kickoffs. I think Nugent is a little underrated but he always makes me nervous. I know the stats after week 1 are solid but I think Feely might even be an upgrade at this point…..I hope feely can just keep his mouth shut. He tends to talk alot!!

  30. By scjoe on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

I don’t see a downside with Feely. I do see a downside releasing Cummings. You saw how he was always around the ball in preseason, I hope they have some kind of a plan to bring him back before someone else signs him, including NE. Ouch!

  31. By Row on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

I don’t care who kicks as long as he can kick an extra point. I don’t know anyone who couldn’t kick a squib as far as Nugent did. Anyone know what the injury really is?

jake, sorry but that’s a personnel question that I can’t answer.

i think brady goin down for the year is the worst thing that could of happen cause just we do win the afc east this year theres always that excuse that brady wasnt playin and if we dont win the afc east theres we should of won it cause brady wasnt around. by the way PATSFAN you smell like schillings bloody sock

The Jets will win!!!! You can see the team coming together and Brett is having fun!

  36. By David E. on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

Keeping Nuge on the active roster and cutting Cummings makes no sense. I like Mike, and yes, his injury was unaccounted for but our 3-4 needs a LB more than it does an extra kicker ! Cummings showed alot in preseason and it would hurt to see him shine in another team’s uniform. Good win to start the season.

Sunday will be an interesting game w/no Brady, but what’s with all the non fan-friendly rules that are being pushed on the site? You can barely bring yourself into the stadium. And…I’m really tired of hearing “we live in a post 9/11 world”. We’re supposed to protect our freedoms not lose more of them. I really can’t bring a bag with a rain suit into the stadium on an overcast day? How sad!

nugent form is bad, he has to much of a soccer shooting form, meaning low and powerful, We need someone who can get power plus lift out of the ball. feely was a great pick up, they should of cut nugent and kept cummings who is a better player at his position.

    go jets

  41. By Ray on Sep 11, 2008 | Reply

Sometimes you guys are HILARIOUS, the grass is always greener (not Jets greener) with someone else. Feely’s an upgrade? Really? So one week into the season and 32 teams could have him on their roster and the only one that picks him up is a team whose kicker got hurt? Nobody had a worse kicker than us that would pick him up? 23 out of 30, but he’s an upgrade…..until he misses his first one.

  42. By Ray on Sep 11, 2008 | Reply

Hey Pats Fan, Brady or no Brady your team should have handled the Chefs with ease at home. Instead you struggled mightily. Do you really think how the Jets played against Miami last week is gonna have any bearing on how we play this week?

  43. By Dennis on Sep 11, 2008 | Reply

The kicker is so bad there would have been games lost in the end with him kicking the ball. Brett I’m a packer fan for 40 years a world class athlete myself, I personally was glad to see you pressed on to compete this year like you wanted despite what the packer organization was trying to do with you.Stay tight and play with your heart and you’ll be just fine win or lose your giving your best!!

I love how our fans comment on players and situations when they have no inside information or have seen them practicing. perhaps Cummings was waived because he didn’t play up to par with the practice squad, maybe he was bitter for not making the roster..we have no idea
Regarding Feely, hasn’t this guy missed game-winning field goals for teams in the past such as the Giants? Nugent is consistent

  45. By sheesh-o-petes on Sep 11, 2008 | Reply

Hey Fred, Cummings did make the roster, but maybe he was bitter about that.

  46. By extreme on Sep 11, 2008 | Reply

Fred… Cummings was not on the practice squad. He was not bitter for not making the roster… ’cause HE DID make the roster! You may need to recheck your “inside information”.

  47. By Rick Roucoulet on Sep 12, 2008 | Reply

Hey Fred your right. NUGENT is consistant, he’s been missing all the kicks inside the 20 – Im not here to blast you or NUG, im just a diehard fan frustrated with the situation. So no disrespect

  48. By Fred on Sep 13, 2008 | Reply

My mistake… but again we don’t know how he was doing in practice. I’m sure there was a reason he was waived… there are 2 games that I can remember that Nugent missed easy field goals… yes true… but again there must be a reason nobody picked up Feely… I’m also a cautious diehard fan and won’t jump on Feely’s bandwagon just yet… also how do you release our #1 kicker b/c he gets injure
