LYONS: Stop the Ugliness for Buffalo

Posted by jetsstaff on October 27, 2008 – 12:20 pm

Everyone has either watched or seen the advertisement for Ugly Betty. America Ferrera with her glasses and braces is like watching a football game with turnovers and mistakes — not the greatest thing for your stomach.

Remove it all and you have a beautiful actress and a team that can win any football game.

The Jets allowed Kansas City to believe that they could win the game with three turnovers by Brett Favre and a defense that made Tyler Thigpen think he was back at Coastal Carolina throwing one completion after another. Sometimes when you play a bad team, which Kansas City is, you play down a level and forget to take advantage of their weakness … rush defense.

Kansas City came into yesterday’s game last in the NFL in rush defense, allowing over 200 yards per game. While the Jets finished the game with over 100 yards rushing on the afternoon, they only ran the ball nine times in the first half for 80 yards. And one of those runs was a 60-yard touchdown run by Leon Washington. Thank God for Leon Washington, he was outstanding.

Bottom line, it’s hard to win in the NFL. The Jets did in Ugly Betty style, but getting ready for Buffalo, you’d better take the costume off, put your mouthpiece in and buckle your chinstrap. You might even want to do all that on the flight to Buffalo — if you wait for the game to start, that might be too late.

You thought Oakland was a hard place to play? Buffalo is even harder. The fans are loud and they’re right on top of you and they do not like the Jets. The Bills are a physical team, so be ready. You’re right in the mix of the AFC East at 4-3. A lot is riding on this game. Borrowing a line from the movie "Water Boy," "You can do it."

Buffalo is the last game of the first half of the ’08 season, and 5-3 would be nice. Stop the Ugly Betty turnovers, protect the quarterback and believe that you can win. Believe …

Talk to you next week. Until then, live, love, laugh and be happy.

I couldn’t agree with you more about getting ready for Buffalo. Why don’t you go talk to thsi players? And the best advice you gave live, love, laugh and be happy is the best. BTW It was great to see those players from the SB team. It brought back a lot of memories. Hope we can get to see that again sooner than later. It all starts this week. GO JETS!!!!

Marty, this might be our team , UGLY. We have talent & can win the close ugly ones if we limit turnovers & penalties. With Favre I’m not sure we can eliminate turnovers, therefore we might be a mediocre team at best, with a very slim outside chance. I wish it were different but my eyes don’t lie & I refuse to blame the coaches, the players need to execute & play smarter.

We have one of the worst O & D Coordinators in the league! How do you make a game plan to let the All Time INT King, now for the year too! throw the ball 40 times when you could run the ball all day long and toss some play actions in the mix?? Sutton couldn’t come up with a plan to get some pressure and make some turnovers?? This team is embarrassing to watch. Empty backfield on 3rd and short??

  5. By Jeremy on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

If it weren’t for Leon this game was another Loss. Every year Mangini and his crew can’t win a game convincingly that they are supposed to?? That tells me that the coaching staff and game plans are mediocre at best and they need GO! No turnovers on KC & Thigpin? You throw 2x as much as you run against the worst Run D in the league?? Until Sutton & Shotty leave this team is going nowhere fast!!

I have the perfect point to make about our schemes.. U want proof on the ridiculous For any 1 paying attention That includes woody .. We used Brad smith 1 play every game so far right & what was it? a reverse… he gained 1 yard against the worst D in the league >> NEWS FLASH genius every team watches game film .. OH excuse me he had 1 incomplete pass this week.. Again unacceptable

  7. By Kenny on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

MANGINI needs to stop thinking about ON SIDE KICKS and put FAVRE under center and use the PLAY ACTION FAKE on EVRY play to hold the defense. Why is FARVE in the SHOT GUN every time he is going to pass? Being in the shot gun tells the “D” that u r going to PASS. If u put FARVE under center and PLAY ACTION FAKE every play then the “D” has to freeze. And the PLAY ACTION help s both the run & pass

  8. By Dunnie on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

Ok … we need to give Brett a permanent pass until the coaching and play calling improve. This guys is playing better than most QBs in the league right now … and he has no time to throw and is injured. Brett is awesome. If we end up 8-8 or worse … its time to change the coaching staff. At least the coordinators. I cant stand Sutton’s calling. I say let VG play 10-20 snaps a game to learn.

  9. By Bill on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

For all u people that said let FARVE be FARVE & open up the offense, & let FARVE throw the ball. Now u see why u can’t just open up the offense with FARVE. INTERCEPTIONS! Lets c if u still want to OPEN up the offense! Favre needs to be under center, using (PLAY ACTION FAKE) to help HOLD the defense. Not in the SHOT GUN for every pass play, so the defense knows that u r going to PASS, MANGINI!

  10. By Frank on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

Here it is in an nutshell the team is not responding to the coaching staff. There has been no improvement and the play is getting more sloppy each week. Receivers are not finishing their routes, O-line can’t pass block Favre is taking a beating. The defense can’t make a stop when one is needed and the secondary continues to give up big plays having hybrid LB’s trying to cover people is ridiculous.

  11. By Frank on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

I’ll keep saying it over and over again there is too much talent on this team that is being under utilized and not coached correctly. This team should be playing a lot better than they have shown. Case in study look at the Rams who were awful until they fired Linehan and they are signifcantly better now. Mangini and his coaching staff are still not getting it done the clock is now ticking.

  12. By Patrick from PA on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

I think it’s about time Mangini relieves Sutton of his defensive play calling duties just like what Wade Phillips is doing in Dallas. Our secondary couldn’t stop the 31st ranked pass offense in the league. It’s pathetic and unacceptable.

  13. By Ray on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

MikeMc, I don’t JUST blame the coaches either, but I definitely think they carry their share of the blame here. That was a horrible game plan. Ira made a good point about not having a TE, but we still had to make them at least think we were going to run. Even if it was the ugly 3 yards and a cloud of ground up tires. I miss Donnie Hendersons defense.

For once I would love to see this team play awesome and have a solid season. Every year it’s the same ole song why can’t we improve like the G-men. This year we have yet to find our identity are we a passing team or a running team. We are more like we will let help the other team win team. I am sick of this sure I’m glad we won but do I really have to be so stressed out watching a game.GetridofOC.

  16. By jak,ex packer fan new jet fan on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

at times i think its the pressure to succeed[exspecially with new team n fans],that gets favre in trouble. its ok to punt or kick fg.against mediocre teams. but favre needs to play full throttle ,against the elite teams .lets hope the critcism doesnt curtail him.

  17. By Ira on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

Dunnie, Sorry man but Favre is being very careless with the ball. He should have never thrown that pass to Stuckey over the middle late in the game with a 4 point lead and Stuckey being double covered. You are right i believe he has been hurt since the Bengals game and contiues to get banged up. This team has lots of talent. They all need to get on the same page and come together for the Bills.

  18. By Mike W on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

All I have to say is stop blaming Brett Favre. He is only calling the plays he is told too. The past 3 games the play calling isn’t disguised. Not only that Favre has no time to pass the ball. The offensive line needs to stand up and take pride in protecting a legend. He can’t keep taking shots like he is. Take away Leon Washington and there is a big “L” for yesterday. Coaching staff, wake up

  19. By OriginalJetFan on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

It’s game planning. How do you come off a week with 240 rushing yards, go against the worst run defense in the league and run 8 times in the 1st half. Look at 1968 in the brochure they gave out, Joe threw 5 interceptions twice in 3 games for losses, they dialed it back and pretty much swept the table from there with a balanced attack, where he threw NO TD passes for 5 games. Coach the Team ERIC

when in rome i liked your article but i disagree about the down play of the jets playing to a lower level because of kc’s season they have played horrible from the start the one good game was against the cards something just aint right and the jets need to fix but i do agree the bills hate us and we are poised to stay in the hunt with a win they better strap the helmets and bring the battle axe

keep in mind guys the bills lost to the fins sunday and are going to want to make up that loss by making an example of theJETS the fins go to a banged up denver team and proved they are tough enough to play in the league with NE going to IND we have a chance to stay in the mix by slapping the bills hard in the face and make them remember who there playing and the bonehead plays need tostop JETSWIN

marty(giving him the business down there)great article this team needs to wake up and figure out its game time buckle up those straps and hit some one instead of getting hit.its time for this d to put edwards on his butt, and knock lynch out of ny.this game can and should be won by the jets ,NOW LETS GO WIN A GAME

  25. By Frank on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

Ira do you remember last year vs. the Giants and Bengals wasn’t that Chad throwing int’s in the red zone when we had the lead late in the game? The common denominator is the coaching staff. They are responsible for the play calling and the game plan. We are watching the same garbage for 3 years it doesn’t matter who the personnel are it all looks the same. Mangini and Co. aren’t getting it done!

  26. By Hogan on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

I understand the pass happy O, without a blocking TE there was no way to not show what they were going to do. That being said the run stiill was OK so why not try. Farve is great but only one man, When he thinks it is all on him he gambles to much. Those last 2 int’s were unexeptable. Any one else would be in jepordy of loseing the start. If we fall out of PO contention, I say play Ratliff.

I’m an ex-packer,new Jets fan and thank goodness everyone isn’t blaming Brett for everything. I loved it though that Brett said he didn’t blame the fans for booing!! I HATE it when he throws interceptions but I always know that he hates it even more than I ever could. He’s not perfect but he’s a good guy and he always tries really hard. Now if we could just beat the Bills this Sunday!! Go Jets

  28. By Row on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

I think Brad Smith should be the 3rd WR, he was clutch in the Oakland debacle. I also think the LB’s need some coaching. It seems they are in a zone half the time. What happened to the blitz without a down lineman? Everyone knows we could have ran the ball, it was a judgment call. VG is always lining up down, he should be used. Miller and Lowery split time, Elam starts over Smith. Sit Chatman

These game I hope were extended preseson games, practice routes and formations in real time, if not Im afraid the coaches may have lost there minds, and the players lost belief. I really dont think thats the case, well see this weekend

why dont we use leon washington alot more than we do, he’s fast, he’s quick, and he breaks more tackles then jones. he’s our best offensive and special teams player, he’s a gamebreaker and he needs more touches. If we use him alot more in the running game, it’ll open up our passing alot more and favre wont be throwing 3 picks a game….but hey a wins a win and this was a very ugly win. go jetsss

  31. By Drew on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

Wow Frank…..referencing the Rams to make your piont against Mangini. Come on now. Every team has a wake up and usually plays better for a few weeks after a coach is fired. Listen I cant defend the coaching staff any longer. They need to do a better job. Favre has got to do a better job with the ball though also. His redzone decsions have been awful 3 weeks in a row.

  32. By mike on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

Can’t watch any more. Run the ball only 23 times against the worst run defense in the league. Shotgun on 3rd and 1. Not consistantly blitzing a very young QB. What are we trying to trick them with stupidity? Where’s Gholston? Watch an old KC game when they had Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas, they used to put them together on either side and pressure one side. Try this with Gholston + Coleman

  33. By Frank on Oct 27, 2008 | Reply

Drew tell that to 49er fans. Mangini needs to lighten up significantly start smiling and show the players he is not a robot. Emotion is good get the Italian genes going and blast someone everyone once in a while or give someone a hug…wake up the Belichick routine is old, boring and doesn’t work unless Brady is your QB. Be like big Bill instead of little Bill. Radical changes or a new job looms!

I’ve been going to games for 10 years. This year is the most boring year yet. The team has no emotion! The coach’s CEO, monotone approach is killing the whole fabric of the Jets.I became a Jet fan because even at 1-15 they played with heart.I have not seen that under Mangini. In addition, the “game specific” plan is not working.Dump it or this will be a 7-9 season if we’re lucky. Stupid idea anyway!

  35. By Xavion on Oct 28, 2008 | Reply

I wish I could get 3hours with this coaching staff. We have way too much talent to let this go on like this We should be dominating teams like the chiefs. Why is Dustin Keller not being used the way he was meant to be used. They way everyone else is using thier TE or Slot wr against us. I didnt see the game But I can surely assume we didnt put pressure on the young QB this staff is to be blamed

  36. By Ray on Oct 28, 2008 | Reply

I like Leon like everyone else, but he’s not an every down back. If you use him too much he’s not as effective. He’s a change of pace and a third down back, he’s not a 20+ touch, carry the load guy. We need to use TJ and Richardson more. Damien Woody can’t pass block worth a crap, he has almost gotten Brett killed. Maybe he can still run block.

We have big names which really doesn’t mean anything but lets raise the hell this team does on paper and show them we are not a paper team.

Well favre haters .. Finally broke a record winning 3 games in a row which we were at a disadvantage in turnover statistics.. Randy has any other jet QB achieve this milestone ? No matter how bad he plays always gave us a better chance to win then chad .Any time chad played from behind or more turnovers then our opposition we lost .. So far bretts 3 0f 4 the those games .. Still want him back

Cont, Favre ..Am I crazy is it possible mangini isn’t letting Favre audible at the line cause sure seems to me he isn’t .. making some checks maybe.. But that’s it . If that’s the case then I believe mangini’s ego is bigger then the team ..Would be a big mistake… If favre is allowed to audible more often Opposing defences will back off blitzing.. Resulting in more time to work his magic

  42. By Rob on Oct 28, 2008 | Reply

This team has so much potential, and everyone knows that. So stop being mediocre and start putting fear in teams facing us on both sides of the ball. Brian needs to slow the craftyness and rely on pure talent that we have. Throw a 30 yard pass on first play, but have a HB to pick up blitz. I think we can get real good…real fast…J-E-T-S.

  43. By ny Jet on Oct 28, 2008 | Reply

Make no mistake about it our defense is mediocre and the offense is watered down. There is no creativity in the offense and our receivers can’t get open against man coverage as we saw in the Oak game. Mangini is supposed to be a defensive guy I know they have sacks but how many 3 and outs do they force. Dominant defenses get off the field on 3rd down. This team scares no one right now.

Our team has sooooooooo much potential and is sitting on soooooooo much talent. I would like to question the offensive coaches decision to take T.Jones basically out of the game, by hardly using him. Call me crazy but doesn’t Kansas City have the leagues worst rushing defense. Instead of making them adjust and respond, our coaches did it for them by forcing the pass, time and time again.

  46. By Troy on Oct 28, 2008 | Reply

This debacle is not Favre’s fault , 1st off when your in a shotgun with 4 wr’s and a 1 back the D knows your throwing(plus giving the fact our draw play out of the gun has never worked so the D not afraid of it)2nd when your spread out like that the opposing D is sending more people than we can block, inturn Favre has to get rid of it too quick if at all and most of the time if completed short of 1

  47. By Troy on Oct 28, 2008 | Reply

cont… when 3rd and 4 from the KC 12 with a 4pt lead RUN THE DAMN ball if you dont get the 1st kick the FG and take a TD lead ,this is basic high school coaching, I just dont understand what this staff is thinking ,they will not win another game remaining if they continue to coach and gameplan like this. They need to show some emotion other than Favre when they score ,that starts at the top TOO..

Does Woody Johnson watch the games Mangini & the rest of coaches have the wrong gameplans which don’t utilize strengths against opponents. Every game they cost us points by making terrible calls. Our O line looks like crap.Where is the pass protection. Favre is always under constant pressure. We forgot how to use playaction.Regardless, the line is always getting beat. Our pass D needs alot of help

Ugly doesn’t capture the half of it – Sometimes it seems that Brett is the only one who really wants to win. I don’t blame the players for this I think the game plans have been awful. It seems that two out of every three plays Brett is in the shotgun – there is no play action so teams just sit back on the pass. Seems the young coaches are stary eyed over Brett and forgotten the rest of the team
