Four Big Mockers Tout 3 Choices for Jets
Posted by on March 23, 2009 – 11:07 amNFL.com just unleashed a fourpack of mock drafts in the last day, and the league website’s draft gurus have several options for the Jets, assuming that the Green & White stay put at No. 17.
I always turn to Pat Kirwan first. One of the most insightful voices on NFL.com and Sirius NFL Radio has shifted his choice of wideouts for the Jets, from Hakeem Nicks to Jeremy Maclin.
"The Jets may fall in love with Freeman by April, or believe Mark Sanchez will fall to them," Kirwan writes, "but after Laveranues Coles left via free agency the receiver group may need help. Maclin is a very exciting player who led the nation with more than 200 yards of offense a game at Missouri."
Draft analyst Charles Davis thinks the Jets will fall in love with Freeman, the Kansas State QB, as do many of the team’s fans expressing their opinions on newyorkjets.com.
"Many thought this would be Mark Sanchez," Davis says in a terse observation, "but the K-Stater is gaining momentum by the day."
Steve Wyche also is on board with Freeman.
"Several teams want Freeman and could have to trade ahead of this pick or with the Jets to get him. Freeman’s stock is soaring," Wyche confirms. "The Jets need a quarterback, but they could trade for a veteran, deal this pick and move back in the draft for additional second- and/or mid-round selections.
And finally, the loquacious Jamie Dukes provides a defensive alternative in Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith for the Jets, who have spent most of this off-season pursuing and signing D-talent for the D-minded Rex Ryan.
Ryan’s "organized chaos" scheme, Dukes observes, "puts tremendous pressure on the cornerbacks, who will be called upon to play man-to-man. Smith reminds me of Samari Rolle, whom Ryan coached in Baltimore.

Well, it offickal, Jets are in the Cutler.I know some don’t want team to pursue this, but no matter what Rex says, without Quality QB this team won’t be in any SBs in 2 yrs. This kid has a stellar record when his team gives up 24 or fewer points. This will not give up 24 points a game. All anyone needs to know is when haven’t found a replacement for Namath and chickened out on getting Marino.
By Howard on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
i certainly dont want a qb with the first pick after see some footage of percy havins pro day with his explosivness off the line of scrimmage i kind of like him for now but ill change my pick 20 times by draft day any how found a sight that has over 200 mocks on it
By wayne on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
This team let rumors about Marino scare them out of drafting him and they let rumors about Warren Sapp scare them out of drafting him.Enough with the chicken bleep already!!!All athletes are primadonnas. Some hide it better than others.I believe given a chance this kid will want to prove that everything said about him is untrue. We may not get him, but I’ll feel better knowing they tried.

I think Alhponso Smith is gonna be great, but I can’t see the Jets going CB in the first round. All this Josh Freeman talk is so rediculous. The Jets could fly somewhere to work out a holder for fieldgoals and these Mock GURUS will have them trading up inside the top five for him! If we don’t trade out,it’s gonna be TE Petigrew or RB Wells.
By uncle joe on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Now Braylon Edwards is someone I would trade for.We should offer Mangini our #2 and Thomas Jones,or our NUMBER 56! That Edwards made Revis look like a kid in Pre Season!Any receiver that can beat Revis is worth it in my book!
By DLark on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
why waste a roster spot last year by keeping 3 backup QB’s and then not give them a chance this year? After practically no contribution from last years #1 they are not good enough to spend another #1 on a future QB. They should Grab a LB or CB who can play NOW!
By Ira on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Randy, If the Jets do have a 1st rd pick this year [i doubt it] i would be happy with either Nicks or Macklin. As for the CB spot i really like Butler from Conn over all of the ones rated above him.

We are gel’in on D so lets get Ratty in there and get that big arm pumped up, definitely need the fastest WO we can get. Yeh! GO J-E-T-S

17 is an Intriguing Choice….Yes, the Jets Need a quaterback..Rumors have it that they may push for Jay Cutler. But in order to get Cutler are you willing to part with your 1st & 3rd Rounders this year and as high as a Possible 2nd Round pick in next year’s draft.. If the jets stay put and go after Freeman; do the Jets go after Tory Holt? Where things stand; its a roll of the dice
By Leam on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Im sorry but i dont believe that we’ll draft a qb this year im happy with what we have at the moment. plus better Qbs should be available in next years draft so if need be we can test the water this year and make a decision on a qb next year. I think nicks is the best option for us to go for at 17 i just like the way he plays good speed good hands and runs good routes end of discussion
By uncle joe on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Wayne,Don’t believe the Jets are going after Cutler because Gary Meyers and the Daily Nonsense said so! They make stuff up as they go along. The same great reporter said the Jets are missing out on all the great coaches and Tannenbaum has no idea what he’s doing. The Hour after Rex was available he was a Jet! I think he knew what he was doing Mr. Meyers!
By Frank on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
We need to get Cutler if we don’t we are not picking a QB or CB or WR with our first pick we need a Tackle and a front 7 defensive player. The O-line is going to be a problem this year unless Cutler is our QB.
By Refayel on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
It would be awful nice of Mangini to help out the Jets with a Cutler trade. But I’m sure he would want the first round pick. I think this draft is even more exciting than the one when they had 4 first round picks. The draft could swing so many ways when they’re waiting down at 17. I read you like Kirwin’s choices but he has Curry dropping to 8? KC will not pass up on him to lead their defense.
By Ira on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Wayne, Culter is 13-4 when his D holds the other team to 24 or less points.

Absolutly hate the idea of Jay Cutler in NY, but I feel if we don’t take a chance on this guy than how can we compete with NE. I think our D is set but our O is unproven. We can wait and find out than Ratty or Clemens is good enough or we can trade for Jay maybe the best young QB that could be availible for years. This guy has all the tools and has probowl worthy. With age his aditude will change.

Again I will be shocked if McDaniels deals with the Jets on any level out of loyalty to Belicheck. All Mr T is doing is showing his lack of confidence in Ratliff & Clemmens by throwing his hat into this mess. This appears to be a desperate move and I am very disappointed in the way we are going about our business. I want a top notch QB also but how bout being a little discreet

if freemans stock is startin to soar maybe we can get an extra first rounder next year and an extra 2nd rounder this year and trade out of this spot??
By wayne on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
I find it pretty hard to believe that McDaniel would do anything that might upset his mentor’s applecart either, but if Jets put best offer on table and he chooses to opt for a lesser deal, his days in Denver would be finished even before it got started. This is all a bunch of what ifs, maybes and wishing but……

i would love jay cutler in NY if we get cutler we are deffinetly a superbowl team and cutler is better than what we have right now and if we dont get cutler i think brett should get the spot. to get cutler give up clemons and a and a first rounder or a second rounder it will work
By Chris C. on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
I do not like the idea of the Jets getting Jay Cutler. I believe that the Jets master plan should be… Sign Jeff Garcia to a 1-2 year deal. Draft Darrius Heyward-Bey at #17. Trade Kellen Clemens and 2nd rounder to move up in 2nd round and take McCoy. Give Ratliff a shot and use Garcia as insurance.
By Led on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
I suspect the Jets are leaking info to convence the world they’ll draft a QB, increasing their leverage with possible QB-desperate partners with whom to trade down. Unless somebody surprising drops, I suspect the Jets will try to trade down into the 20′s and then trade up in the second to get the best combo of WR and DE. Would folks object to Heyward-Bey at, say, 22 and Jarron Gilbert at 42?
By Mike Jet Vet on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Here’s what I think .To get Cutler serve up Ellis-T Jone’s -THE Brick 0r Clemens In any combination & maybe a 2Th rd pick That will get it done & with our 1st Pick get big time Receiver RB or TE… Let Rhatty learn behind Cutler & were all set Try that 1 out foe size .. Hate to say but T-Jone’s career is over here watch & see ..Pull the torn out of the paw now be4 it’s to late Bears did it
By Rob G. on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
I think the Jets should give up Clemens and 3rd, 5th round picks for Cutler, if they want to win now. I agree with some saying let Ratliff have a chance, but if he doesn’t make it, then you know where that leaves us. Pick Machlin/WR from Mizzou with the first pick and address QB in 2nd round. Garicia wouldn’t be a bad choice as an insurance policy, but give him a 1 yr deal for now.
By Jetsman on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Chris, McCoy isn’t in the draft this year, if you’re talking about Texas QB Colt McCoy.
By Christopher on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Trading out is looking better each day. Detroit probably does not want to draft QB #1, and they may be interested in the Jets #17 to get Freeman. Detroit has the first pick in Rd2. There will still be plenty of receivers available with that pick. It really depends on what the Jets plan to do at QB, I really hope we stay put at QB and see where we are at. Cutler sounds good, but will cost too much
By David on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
Why wouldn’t the jets go after Cutler he is young and has a lot of talent. Anyone who says that they would have to give up a third and first rounder is wrong because Cassel went for only a second rounder and denver was talking trades Cassel for Cutler. They should definitely not go for Garcia. You can look at last season and see what happens when you get an old QB (FAVRE) who was once good.
By Jason on Mar 23, 2009 | Reply
I would much rather have Byron Leftwhich on the roster then Jeff Garcia. At this point I think it can go up anywhere. If the Jets don’t get Cutler, its all down to them placing faith in their QB’s or getting Freeman

Enough about Cutler and drafting a quarterback! Cutler can’t cut it in NY and why are unproven players always better then what we already have. Clemens is the man. Behind a strong offensive line and with a top defense we’re set at QB. Now lets find a deep threat at receiver.

too many jet fans forget Kellen Clemens was a second round pick for us a few years ago, let’s see what the kid can do (now that we have a decent o-line). . . .Remember when Tampa Bay traded away some young and unproven young QB named Steve Young to the 49ers?

I’ve been doing alot of draft research and this is my conclusion: heyward bey scored only 3 tds his last yr and despite his speed didnt consistantly get seperation enough to use it.The lack of scoring is an issue.Nicks gained alot of weight between the combine and his proday, Maclin is a weapon and i really hope they get him.Maclin and Moreno had numerous big plays and really stood out to me.

uncle joe, easy on the Edwards thing, he beat Revis on one play in game one of the preseason. Come week one of the regular season he couldn’t catch a cold. He has had more drops than T.O. in the last three years.

K. Clemens is this decade’s version of Ryan Leaf, they should have cut him last year instead of Pennington! The only reason he’s still there is because Tannenbaum trying to prove he didn’t waste a 2nd round pick on Clemens. If Tannenbaum was smart, he’d trade Clemens & a 2nd or 3rd round pick to Denver for Cutler & trade our 1st rd pick this year for Boldin or Braylon Edwards.

Have we all lost confidence in Clemons? And suppose Ratliff IS the real deal? Forget Leftwich (bum) or Garcia. Sure, it’s a gamble, but we took a stupid gamble last year because all of you kept ripping Chad. Maybe we should stay pat and if a superstar like Maclin falls to 17, take him. Ratliff has two years out of college. These rookies are more expensive and a huge gamble compared to what we have

WHO CARES. Anybody that watched Cutler throw the ball around the Meadowlands last season knows why we need him. He is young, so sure he has thrown some picks. Maybe this is the year he puts it together

We Have not had a Solid QB since i can remember,06 we should have taking Cutler. heres our chance to get him,get him NOW OR WE GO 5-11 this season.

I would love to see the Jets take an exciting Wideout for their 1st rd pick at 17th overall…
Why waste a pick on a QB who in reality is just as big a question mark as K. Clemens or B. Ratlif…..what’s the point of having these QB’s if we will never see what we got in them….why not build around them like we seemingly have built up our defense….let the D carry them, see what you have at QB
By russ on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
Why dont we allow our QB’s opportunity to succeed first rather than run around like a dweeb playing fantasy football with “better” players. Cutler hasnt won a damn thing and is too thin skinned to make any impact in life…Not much of a man so I doubt real men will follow him on the field
By russ on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
We have three qb’s all labeled losers by managment before ever given an opportunity to succeed. This is indicative of an organization that now values form over substance. Cutler has proven one thing in the NFL..he’s not much of a man and not the kind that I would share a foxhole with. The Suits should allow Clemons and Radcliffe the opportunity to succed instead of playing fantasy football
By Adam W. on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
Drafting a QB is always a gamble. There are no Matt Ryan’s in this draft, and definitely no one “ready to play right away” will be available in the middle of the first round. I say we trade a 1st round and maybe a 3rd for Cutler. Cutler is a sure thing. He might be known as a jerk, but he has the skills that can get us deeper in the playoffs.
By Charlie on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
Please, everyone, remain calm! Cutler is on his way and we’ll be looking at hopefully shoring up our currently decimated offense with both a free agent and a quality draft pick!
I have confidence that neither Mr. Tannenbaum nor Mr. Johnson would let the fans down by doing anything to the contrary. After all, that brand new stadium and their positive cash flow are predicated on that.
By Xavion on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
I am not the Biggest fan of Clemens But Jay Cutler is no better than KC I’d rather have KC Than Jay since J is a Jerk and crybaby. He has a losing record as a starter and TD-int ratio is almost 50% So what he has a good record when team gives up less than 24. Ill bet he gave the opp a lot of points with turnovers besides Kellen is a perfect 3 for 3 when the Jets gave up less than 20 pnts
By Xavion on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
Cutler had a monster line around him and good recievers.. Javon walker, Brandon Marshall, Royal… His receivers did good jobs with Travis henry was having a good time in Denver… He is worth too much and shown too little Kellen has a strong arm too and ratliff both are mobile and need the chance to show so Keep cutler where he is. We dont need the QB version of T.O.
By Howie on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
Clemens does deserve a shot. The last time he started not only was he inexperienced but he had a terrible O-Line, no pass protection, no WR (Coles was hurt) and as a result, no run game. T Jones struggled to get a 1000 yards. With a good line, good run game he will do a lot better. What the Jets need now is a real #1 WR. If they trade for Cutler on draft day, I can’t blame them. But don’t draft QB

How are we not talking about Brian Cushing? He is by far the SMARTEST defensive player in the draft and he would be a perfect fit fopr Ryan and the Jets. Look at the likes of Matt Cassel and Tom Brady, were they first round picks….NO! You can always find a diamond in the rough in the later rounds but a player like Cushing is the perfect first rounder if he falls into our laos.

Now that we’ve spent all this time and energy on bolstering up our defense doesn’t anybody think its time to do something about the two offense positons we need most.
Quarterback and wide reciever seem to be our most important issues at hand . Unless these DB’s or LB’s can throw the ball down the field i think we’re back to the same old jets
By Thing on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
Niner the reason he didnt lead that comeback was because Coles and McCarenins dropped sure TD’s late in that game. The Jets won’t get Cutler since the Broncos want a proven QB in return. And the Jets should draft Heyward-Bey or Harvin and not a QB. It would be a wast of a pick with 3 on the roster to get an unproven rookie QB cuz Flacco or Ryan duplicate is unlikely in any draft
By Jay on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
We need a receiver more than we need a QB. I don’t know much about Ratliff but I think Clemens has potential. With a totally revamped offensive line, I say give Clemens a shot, I think he can put up some solid numbers. Keep the 17 pick and get Hicks. Off all the receivers I like him because he has great hands and is more physical than the others.

Instead of giving all of our draft picks away for Cutler, We should use them on a 3-4 passrushing DE, Big WR, RB. Some depth and LB and OL would be good.
Getting J Cutler is not the answer. He really need to stay in Denver. I’ll bet that KC will get the Jets to a Superbowl before Cutler gets whatever team he is on to a super bowl… ANY TAKER????

Okay so the Jet’s would draft Freeman, who’s been shakey in accuracy as best. When they also report they love Ratliffe and have whispered he could be a diamond in the rough. So what, you’ll bring in an unproven QB who doesn’t know Shotts very complex offense? *Shakes head* I don’t see it happening. What I’d do is Bring in Boldin. Why draft an unproven reciever when Boldin is on the market?
By cliff on Mar 24, 2009 | Reply
If you get Boldin, it opens up the first pick and all others. It gives you flexability in what you can do. You can get the best available DE, a desperate need. Or another lock down CB. For that matter you could get the best available RB and trade away T.J. I’d rather replace T.J and start building a young backfield so you’re young and strong for many years to come, not just 1 or 2.

Ray Lewis is about the same. Why are we worried about people that already start when we have HUGE holes at key positions on offense? Cutler will be worse then the Favre debacle, no one player is worth a #1&3.

Gangrene and Diehard all that I am getting at is simply this, you let your mouth or actions get in the way of being a TEAM player and you are as good as gone! No man is bigger than the team. There are way too many quality backs in draft that could produce behind our line!!
