Jets Trade Up, Select Sanchez at No. 5

Posted by Eric Allen on April 25, 2009 – 3:37 pm

4:46 p.m. ET: Here’s the compensation. To get to No. 5 and get Sanchez, the Jets dealt DE Kenyon Coleman, S Abe Elam and QB Brett Ratliff to the Brownies in addition to both their first (No. 17 overall) and second (No. 52) selections in this year’s draft.

4:42 p.m.: What a moment! I have to write some other stuff now. Be back to you soon.

4:39 p.m.: Sanchez is putting the jacket on. Looks like Mark Sanchez is coming to Gotham! Crowd going nuts at Radio City! He’s just put the Jets hat on.

4:35 p.m.: Just want to say I love Curry. What an outstanding kid and a wonderful football player. Great pick for the ‘Hawks. Don’t you smell a trade here? Eric Mangini loves defense, so is Boston College DT B.J. Raji the play? There are also a bunch of talented offensive tackles on the board. But is Cleveland listening to a couple of offers?

4:28 p.m.: We’ve reached a pivotal moment here. Do the ‘Hawks grab Sanchez? I say it’s 50/50 (with Wake LB Aaron Curry getting that other 50). If Sanchez falls to No. 5, this is going to get really fascinating.

4:15 p.m.: Chalk, baby. The Rams take Baylor T Jason Smith. Interesting one up next with the Chiefs. We know they won’t take Sanchez. Is it Tyson Jackson time?

4:08 p.m.: The commissioner formally announces the Detroit Lions’ selection of Georgia QB Matt Stafford. That was a shocker! The Rams are on the clock.

4 p.m.: Good afternoon. The draft is finally upon us and I can’t wait to get this darn event started already. Let’s just review the latest speculation on the Jets, who own the No. 17 overall selection, before the Detroit Lions officially announce the pick of Georgia QB Matt Stanford.

Multiple media outlets have reported that the St. Louis Rams are taking calls for the No. 2 overall selection. The thinking is the Rams want to take an offensive tackle — either Baylor’s Jason Smith or Virginia’s Eugene Monroe — but perhaps they could get blown away by a trade offer. If the Jets are as high on USC QB Mark Sanchez as many people think they are, they might be in talks right now.

In that third slot is the Kansas City Chiefs and you have to think they’re going to the defensive side of the ball (LSU DE Tyson Jackson or Boston College DT B.J. Raji) or trading down to stockpile picks. KC got its quarterback with the acquisition of former Patriots backup Matt Cassel.

If Sanchez slips to No. 4, then things are going to really heat up. With Matt Hasselbeck on the roster, do the Seahawks really want the former Trojans signalcaller? Or did we all just watch a lot of smoke blow our way from the Pacific Northwest?

Then Eric Mangini comes back into the picture at No. 5 …

I’ll be with you all day, providing you my thoughts on the spectacle as it happens. I encourage your comments and questions.

A little surprised at how little they gave up to get him, but too bad no more picks today, a receiver would be good. I still disagree with the pick, but could’ve been worse.

i like the trade move but i think its was too big of a price wow our 1st n second round picks, kenyon coleman (does this mean gholston on Dline ?) elam??? and ratty, y ddnt they send clemens either way mangini got the better of that deal he is still mangenious.

Okay, I always say, the coaches watch the film, run the drills, and know all kinds of stuff we don’t. So if Rex and the crew are that high on Sanchez, what the hell, they must know what they’re doing — right? And like I said re picking Freeman, now they HAVE to settle on a QB! Eric, what’d we give away to get the pick? And we still have our number 17 pick? (NFL site still shows it for the Jets.)

I cant complain, but its going to be Kellen vs Sanchez This offseason. Trading Kenyon Coleman means one thing, Looks like theyre putting Vernon Gholston back at DE, or something that puts him in the starting Lineup. When we took number 5, i really thought we were getting Crabtree, but hey they know something we dont, Looks like Clowneys our man with Cotchery too

  6. By hank on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

bad move, gave up way to much for him, elam, ratliff, and coleman plus a second rounder. come on mr t, your gonna tell me this kid is that good, he never faced any real tests in college. they should have traded the 2nd rd pick for boldin and got what they could at 17.

  7. By scjoe on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

JUST HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You give up a talented young QB a decent safety, and a decent starting DE along with a first AND second round pick for another QB who you really don’t know if he will ever become a franchise type QB. Just WAY to much to give up. I feel worse about this mistake then I did last years (Favre) mistake.

They gotta think he can step in and play this year, if he sits behind KC and he has a really good year they have a problem. But not today It’s all good JETS, JETS, JETS

Stunning…Looks like they plan on moving VG back to end where he belongs and in the end that might have been the best part of this trade.

  11. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

YES! Coleman, Ratliff, Elam, and #17 pick, in my book that’s cool, especially since I like Ainge. Coleman and Elam strike me as guys that Mangini loved but might not be up to snuff for Rex. And we still have Leon, Revis, Mangold, and all our other blue-chip guys and all our other picks to get a WR, RB, line guys, and whatever else (punter?). This is looking like the best Jets draft day in years!

i cant believe they made this trade…not only is sanchez not worth it they gave up so much to get this pick…the jets yet again fail in the draft and to all of u who believe this is a good pick ur all crazy…watch i bet my life brett ratliff will have a freaking amazing career in clevland…thats who wud of started for us omg i cant believe this…i dnt think i can be a jets fan now rite now

  13. By jet80 on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

No!why do the jets always bet the farm on everything! underclassmen, not proven didnt play much, another qb that will have to learn our system.and you give up Ratliff, doesnt Mangini have enough good qbs and now we have another unproven and Clemens who will leave after the lack of support from the jets.just gave up our future in Ratiff,im outraged Sanchez better bring it or its all over for us

  14. By sbj on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

I will miss Elam. Didn’t the Browns try to sign him in the offseason? It’s a big risk and I don’t like trading up so high because of the huge cap hit .

  15. By Alan on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

Im thinking about WR’s who can slip to three, Iglesias from Oklahoma, is the only WR i like that can possibly slip that far, But Tannebaum likes to trade, maybe hell some other crazy trade, before the end of today because i doubt hes done today, hel probably make a trade for a 2nd round pick or something

Im just NOT feeling the pick at all (Sanchez) – Rather have a RB if a Bolden trade could be made or a WR – & If it had to be a QB, id prefer FREEMAN – SO AINGE WAS A WASTED PICK LAST YEAR? I feel for our existing QBs (Honestly)

By receiving the hefty compensation to acquire Sanchez, Mangini has inflicted his revenge on the JETS. Ratlif should never have been part of the package. Obviously his value was only known to his ex-coach and the JETS fans.

Well done, T-Rex. Rattliff I liked, but didn’t see him much so who knows. Simms loves this kid and Phil knows his football so I’m on board. Sexy pick for sure. Clemens, however, will be devistated. Put Sanchez in right away or Kellen will be looking over his shoulder. (NOT GOOD) Hey, Flacco played well, why can’t this kid. He doesn’t have to win games with our D. Let’s get behind him. JETSJETSJETS

at least now we dont have to listen to all the experts ask who the jets have for QB, now lets see if the give this team a little more respect. I never believed Clemens was as bad as they made him out to be, but now they have sanchez, hope he pays off

  27. By Jay_Windsock on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

This was a horrible pick. The Jets didn’t really need to get a QB. They already had 3 young QB’s who are decent. All the top WRs were still on the board. Should’ve gotten Crabtree or even Hayward-Bey…I’m totally disgusted.

This morning I was hoping the JETS would not trade up for Sanchez. And as we got closer and closer I was still hoping we would go with another position other than QB. But as the rams were on the clock, and I was sure the JETS would move for Sanchez, I was PUMPED, and VERY EXCITED for the future of the JETS, because the scouts in the NFL know FAR more than I. And I’m TOTALLY STOKED SANCHEZ IS A JET

And this is why owners should not be involved in the draft. Selling PSL’s are more important then building a great team. He doesnt understand that winning sells PSL’s. I like Sanchez, but I liked Ratty and Kellen better. Now give our 2nd and 3 players to get him. Well lets watch Rattlif lead Cleaveland to the playoffs!

  36. By Anonymous on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

Wow this a great thing for the jets. You get a franchise qb that has a ton of potential. Also, this will replace Kellen Clemens which wouldn’t be the best start for the Jets. All we need now is a no.2 wr. With this, the Jets could be a potential for a wild card spot or even winning the division. Also, the Jets offense is a pretty young group of guys didn’t have to give up more draft picks ericM.

Now that they heve got a so called
franchise QB who is he going to
throw it to? They could have stayed at
17 got Freeman still had their second
round pick and got WR maybe a home town
guy from Rutgers or at least the best availablle
WR. Those who stood up for Favre asked who
does Favre have to throw to, well the same
will be asked of our first roun pick.

Please ,we could of stayed at 17 and took Freeman, bigger 6’6″,better arm ,smart and kept all the players ,plus had the 2nd round pick for a wide receiver.Welcome to the Rex era. A lot of Hot air for the next 4 years.

Sanchez has chance to be a star..I like Ratliff too..Clemens not so much..but he didn’t have a chance with bad O-line…the other players can easily be replaced in free agency..and will ..rest assured. Overall..Trade is 50/50 value for both teams with huge upside for Jets if Sanchez hits! JR

I CANNOT believe this JETS organization!!! Are you KIDDING ME!?? If Sanchez doesn’t become the next TOM BRADY, then this Sanchez trade is a BUST!! TYPICAL JETS to PAY a ROOKIE Sanchez tons of money, even thought Sanchez has NOT taken 1 snap in the NFL, and Sanchez has NO experience in the NFL, and Sanchez has never seen a NFL playbook. And the JETS give away RATLIFF! I am done with the JETS!

sanchez is rated higher than stafford by most espn, fox sports news anchors steve young keyshawn johnson, coach edwards trent dilfer, everyone is falling for this guy, but lets remember they drafted him because of the “potential” he might bring, sanchez played in a pro style offense in college, practised against the best defense in the nation in USC

  44. By ksjetfan on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

I was actually thinking they would take Freeman at 17 which would have given them a WR in the 2nd. Maybe they get Boldin in a trade, Sanchez is experienced in a Pro Style offense and smart like Freeman but more accurate. I would have rather seen just Ratty and 2nd Rd, hope it pans out! GO J-E-T-S!

all the experts have Mark Sanchez as the hottest QB in the draft and having a better career then Stafford, and I don t give a rattliff anyway !! we got the QB issue handled I knew the Jets weren’t satisfied at the QB position, and neither was I SOOOOOO Glad we have Sanchez,

  46. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

Every new coach, especially one as forceful as Rex, wants to pick his QB unless he’s already got a great one. They just had a mini-camp from which Ainge was excused and they took Sanchez, so that tells you what Rex thinks of the three QBs they had. And what’s this nonsense about Ratliff beating out Quinn and Anderson? He’ll be lucky to see a snap all year unless the Browns trade one of those guys.

  47. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

I want to salute the folks who are making two points here: Sanchez having played in a pro-style offense and the possible return of VG to the line. Or maybe they’ll still get a DE. The guys on the NFL website raved across the board about the Sanchez move, saying, correctly I think, that we basically gave up a #2 to get him. I’m still suspect of his deep throwing but he’s WAY smarter than Freeman.

I have been out all day listening to this on the radio so I haven’t read what the consensus is of everyone in here but here is my take. If we were going to give away the farm why didn’t we go after Cutler harder. I didn’t want either of these guys. But he’s here now so I hope we made the right move. You knew Mangini was going to make Elam part of the deal. Maclin or Pettigrew made more sense

You are never going to win it all, if you do not gamble. The Jets are gambling that this kid is a future star. They might be right. They might be wrong. Given the pedigree, it is a smart gamble. As far as Ratliff goes, c’mon, he had a few good quarters against a third team D in the Pre-season. Get a clue.

  56. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

Bob, many great USC QBs haven’t made it in the pros, most famously Steve Spurrier. But more recently, Leinart and especially Palmer were doing just fine before they got hurt and losing out to Warner, who’d already won an SB, is nothing to be ashamed of. In the end I gotta trust Rex on this one. And hey, you got a problem with a USC QB named Cassel, who had almost no experience compared to Sanchez?

sanchez is a Huge gamble. i think he is a little small and does not throw tight spirals nor does he have great arm strength. This pick and Gholston could end tannenbaums career.

  64. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

Rick, you expect Rex to say, “I don’t like our three QBs and I’m gonna get somebody else”? What if you can’t GET somebody else? What if the somebody else you want isn’t there when you pick? Besides, maybe Rex DOES like what he saw of Clemens and Ratliff — just not as much as what he saw of Sanchez. Let’s not start giving Cutler-like whining rights to Jets, they’re big boys who make big bucks.

  65. By Ray on Apr 25, 2009 | Reply

Spurrier went to Florida. Bottom line is if you wanted Sanchez you think it is a great move and if not you are hating it. But no matter how sure you are that this is a great or terrible pick, only time will tell who was right. Ironically, we still have 3 qb’s with little or no experience. He’s a Jet now so….. Go Sanchez!! Tannenbaum better fill some holes tomorrow.

Thanks, Ray, I was thinking of almost as big a bust, USC’s Pete Beatherd. Pat Haden and Vince Evans didn’t exactly set the world on fire either. But no, I was against Sanchez for weeks but if they’ll work like this to get him, I feel much better about it. And please, guys, Rex wouldn’t have taken the job without control of the QB situation, he could’ve just waited for another head coaching gig.

I believed & posted on this blog site a while ago that we need a QB & that Sanchez could be a great pick. I guess I was right. Ratty was good but unproven, Coleman’s a journey-man, & I think Elam will be the only one that might be missed. Sanchez has skill, but I suppose training camp, the bright lights of NY and playing will be the true test. Sorry for KC, but as a starter no one ever saw magic.

J, it might help to play in a regular season game or two. C’mon, guys, this is the team that won the biggest SB ever on the young backs of Namath, Snell, Boozer, and Sauer! Now we got Sanchez, Washington, Greene, Keller, Stuckey, and Clowney! Anybody who thinks that ain’t the nucleus of a good O already is on another planet! And as many have said, Jones doesn’t have long to go, contract or not.

  71. By Row on Apr 26, 2009 | Reply

Probably the dumbest move I’ve ever seen by any NFL team. Trade the whole draft for a player that has 16 starts in an offense I could run. Not to mention we had to give up Elam, Coleman, and Ratliff. What is the management thinking? You gotta think Rex had his toes stepped on in this one! If Sanchez starts, he will be the next Matt Leinart, play and be pulled. I see us going 6-10 with him at best!

  72. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Apr 26, 2009 | Reply

This dissing of Leinart shows how much patience some Jet fans have for building a great team and star QB.The guy was awesome in college, started good in the pros, got hurt, and lost his job to possibly the best QB in the game and one of the best readers of coverages EVER. So the jury’s out on him. 6-10 next year with Sanchez would be like Joe’s 5-8-1 and that worked out okay for fans who hung in.

That’s funny JETS 4 LIFE, I was just thinking the same thing about all your posts. Your going ga ga over these picks because YOU like them. So everyone else is an “idiot”. So apparently a TE is not an issue with you. But YOU know football. WE have no depth at several different positions, meaning holes that need filled. But YOU know football. My problem isn’t with who they drafted as much as

the fact that the Jets drafted like a team who only had two holes to fill to make this team complete. Look at what NE did if you want to see how a team builds a winner. Trading down collecting picks, this year and next. And using the picks to fill your many weak spots. Remember that when that undrafted FA TE is the one covering Sanchez’s backside. Oh yeah, but YOU know football.

Hey Ray, nobody on the site should be called an idiot but cheer up, the Jets clearly aren’t done yet! It’s nice to see Rex show faith in our WRs and I bet we get a vet in a trade. A blocking TE will be easy to get. You can’t compare what NE did to what we did because they have almost NO holes to fill. I think Rex is trying to move in young guys while keeping the better old ones, which is smart.

was wondering what took so long Ray. was out of line for that and yes I got the Man I wanted. the Man this team needed, and I was not alone in thinking that way, (the Jets) yes there are other needs not holes. but the can be adressed in time right now the jets can play to win with the roster they have and this draft was not hiding or holding anyone special so the jets made the right move twice.

And Ray I wont remeber an un-drafted TE covering Sanchez I will remember our vetern O-LINE covering him and Sanchez hitting Keller our TE catching first down passes but what do I know??????????????

’64 Tom, I agree to a point, but NE was getting older and actually their D is, or was, very suspect. So they traded down and have collected all kinds of guys that can be developed over time. We are paper thin at several positions. This team is walking a very narrow line with little room for error. If it works out, great.

I sure can’t argue with any of that about NE or our thin bench, Ray. I didn’t like some things about Sanchez myself, though what Rex has said about him took care of much of that. And I don’t think anybody should expect an SB in only a year or two. But after decades of fake rebuilding and wasting big $ on has-beens, this looks like the real thing. I gotta feel good about that — and Rex’s style.

Ok JETS 4 LIFE, I’m not sure what you know. But you clearly DON’T know how important a TE is and how much we are going to miss one. But you will find out. You will see what a HOLE it is when there is no one there blocking anyone.

’64 Tom, really I am not against Sanchez as much as I am against how much we gave up for 2 guys. Maybe I’ll feel better about it if they make some more moves and grab some extra picks somewhere. But until then, I can only comment on our current situation.
