Lowery’s Double Dip: He’ll Start at CB, KR

Posted by Randy Lange on November 15, 2009 – 12:14 pm

It could be a big day for Dwight Lowery at the 4-4 Jets’ return-from-the-bye, gotta-have-it game against the equally 4-4 Jacksonville Jaguars today.

Lowery has been announced as the starting cornerback for Lito Sheppard, who is active but will be worked back in judiciously after missing five of the previous six games with quadriceps issues.

That much we knew. But Lowery has also been announced also as the replacement to return kickoffs for the Jets in place of Justin Miller, who has been deactivated after replacing the injured Leon Washington for only the Miami game two weeks ago.

Also tied into the Jets’ active/inactive list today is a switch in kick coverage. Danny Woodhead, who was on the coverage team that couldn’t contain Ted Ginn during his two third-quarter kickoff-return TDs two weeks ago, has been deactivated and Marquice Cole, the speedster who was inactive for the Dolphins, is up for this game.

Among the Jets’ other inactives are LB Vernon Gholston (hamstring), injured at Monday’s practice and listed as doubtful for the game. It is the second time in his two years as a Jet that Gholston has been deactivated, the first time this season.

The rest of the IAs are QB Kevin O’Connell, CB Ahmad Carroll, LB Ryan Fowler and G Matt Slauson. Erik Ainge is again the third QB.

The Jacksonville inactives: WR Tiquan Underwood, safeties Courtney Greene and Gerald Alexander, LB Adam Seward, DT Derek Landri, OT Maurice Williams, TE Ernest Wilford and DT Greg Peterson. The Jaguars have not designated a third QB.

The Jags also have announced that fifth-year man Sean Considine will get the start at SS for Alexander, who was limited at practice all week with a shoulder injury.

The Green & White are back in their green and whites — green jerseys, white pants — in which they’ve lost four of their last five. The only victory was a significant one, though, coming in their opener and head coach Rex Ryan’s and QB Mark Sanchez’s Jets debuts at Houston.

Also at the Texans game, referee Ed Hochuli was the official wearing the white hat, and Hochuli will do that again today. It is Hochuli’s 14th Jets game since becoming a referee back in the early Nineties.

And working their second Jets game this season in the CBS-TV booth are Dick Enberg and Dan Fouts. Their first game was the overtime loss to the Bills in the Meadowlands in Week 6.

From here I’ll turn it over to Eric Allen and Kyle Richardson in the CoveritLive chat. I’ll provide in-game tweets that will appear in the chat and also on the Jets Twitter page http://twitter.com/nyjets. My game story will be live as soon as possible after the game’s end, EA will do the postgame locker room Radar entry and Kyle will provide a game sidebar.

Then Monday we’ll start all over again for that always special week of preparation before heading up to Providence, R.I., Foxboro, Mass., and Gillette Stadium to play the Patriots.

We must go after Larry Johnson . Also I just heard Anquan Boldin will be available. We have got to consider these upgrades if we are serius .

2 weeks off is bitting them, missed tackles etc. again the genious w/ have calling the game starts off w/ int, sanchese will be a high paid journey man!, Jim Nance wrong is stating Jags stop Jones avg 5 yds a carry, off game plan, coaching killing this season. sanchese not good enough to audible….Run 70% contoll! take it out of this guys hands , and why rush to the line on off give the D some air!

If they can controll T.O.P they may have a chance. the O line is a better Run block unit any way. They need to sit this kid a game or if they do not stop putting him in a position to lose the game which has happened in three of the loses! Maybe Marty would have been a good choice, @ least to run the offence and break sancheze in better. I dont see him learning or improving! Cant stop the run tdy

Outcoached, Outplayed. So tired of watching this team find ways to lose games. Pathetic coaching of a bye week!

Loss to Jacksonville,… at home? …. I am sick. Utterly disgusting. Better luck next year.

Lowery should never start @ corner again. How many 3rd and longs did he give up today? This whole outing was pathetic!!! Hey Jets, stop telling us about it, and start showing us! This team stinks.

if you really think the jets should get larry johnson you have no idea what your talking about and should immediatly consider not speaking ever again who ever said the jets should get him

To dejected right now to think, but I will say this, this team was not prepared to play today. You can question almost every phase of the game, but you have to start with the coaching. Clock management again was costly, the D once again failed when game is on the line. Looks like we are in the coffin, a loss next week and all the nails will be in place.

Wow! LOVE the Jets, but kinda sick of 9 & 10 week seasons. Would love a season that extends up to 16 wks and beyond: That would be novel. Seems RR keeps finding new ways to lose every week. Like I said I LOVE the Jets, but I HATE the way they make me feel. Something needs to change & my bet is Schotty. He knows MS is a rookie, yet gives him big plays like 1st of the game. Can’t with a rookie QB.

Pathetic.Im SICK of losing EVERY YEAR.If they dont care-why should we.I can find much better things to do with my time and money.Good luck-Im done.

Please find a new OC immediately or at least for the next yr….schotty stinks…and desperately need a good corner opposite Revis…Also need to get rid of Kerry Rhodes..All he seems interested in is his hollywood career…Leohnard is so much tougher…you are too soft kerry Rhodes…And please get us pass rushers…i think Shaun Ellis and Bryan Thomas need to go…just aren’t impact players…

Another depressing Sunday. It’s beginning to look like old times..our hopes come crashing down as usual. Good teams win close games. We lose those, even to mediocre teams. Despite Rex’s big mouth, we’re not a good team.

It has to be the rookie coach and BQ who i like that just does not know how to win.every week its something diferent. the talent is there.Shotty gots to go.

I just can’t put my finger on this team, or maybe I should say this franchise. This team has lost four games to teams with a 500% or worse this year, yet, they beat NE, win IN Houston (2 playoff contenders) and play undefeated NO tough. But the thing I can’t put my finger on, is how can that happen year after year? Last year it was Oak, SF, Denver. All coming after wins at NE, AND undefeated Tenn.

Well it’s not like I’ve not said it over &over This team is & plays horrible who will debate that now ..Let me break it down any team needing to heal or a feel good win just come play the New York Jokes& YOUR ON THE WAY ..Miami twice Bills & now Jacksonville how much more can us Joke fans endure its time to hold the team & org accountable Fans it’s time to hit them where it hurts in the pockets

I hate to go with that “curse” theory, but what else makes any sense anymore?

the two buddies sure teamed up on this game, Edwards with his hands and Rhodes with his cover skills which he has none.the jets will learn one day there are no quick fixes, stop signing overpriced stars, i.e. sheppard, scott, douglas and have their scouts start earning there keep by drafting young talent.

Don’t care what rex say’s SAME OLD JETS!!!!!

  19. By Mike Jet Vet on Nov 15, 2009 | Reply

Cont. No way should we be losing these games only way to success in this league is to build through the draft untill we do & stop throwing all our picks away for nothing in return it’s never going to change …We’re always 1 or 2 steps behind the elite teams because of using the same old tired tactics every year buying used up players who excite 1 week & stink the next then fold all together

The problem with hypeing the first game of the year as ‘THE SUPERBOWL”, there’s no where else to go. Rookie coach, rookie mistake. Slow and steady wins everytime. Come out of the box too hot and it’s difficult to maintain that level of emotion and motivation. Better luck next year. Stick a fork in them, their done.

It’s obvious the Jets are more interested in selling jerseys then winning games. Sanchez is horrible. I would take Rex Grossman over him. How can Rex continue to say he gives us the best chance to win. Make the rookie earn it, give him a clip board. We have 7 more games. No awards for the “hardest team”, none for the “mouth” Scott. Just a loss. Rex should just say “I’ll fix it” and walk away..

Everybody SHUTUP saying this team is not good. How many pro bowlers and first round draft picks do we have starting for this team. The problem is WE CAN’T PASS THE BALL!!PERIOD!!!

  23. By Anonymous on Nov 15, 2009 | Reply

When I was 23, I had to earn my way and show results. If I did something stupid at work, there was no job to be had. And that was at a salary of $18K/year. Now at a salary of $3.2MM for a few months, you tell me. Why are we not using our backup QBs? Shame on you Rex.

people just stop with the shotty stuff these plays were there the first play sanchez was short w/the ball j-co was 2 yards behind the d the 4th and 1 call to the goal line no ones complaining there its not the play calls but the execution in this game, how ever this team was ill prepared for this game and that is on the head coach and in 4 of 5 loses we had a lead in the 4th qtr wheres the d

Ask Bart how that pie is tasting. Get rid of Shotenheimer, Bench the kid, Sanchise is my guy ? Rex keep thinking like that Dont believe Woody has much patience left. Damage controll for the post game comedy joke joke joke

Making excuses or giving reasons for losing every week doesn’t cut it. A great/ tough/ feared/ respected team WINS at the end of the day. EVERY team is judged on their record, regardless of whether you lose by 1pt or win 1pt – it’s the difference between the Ws & Ls that counts. We are a good team, but not even close to being great. Same old, same old. Like a busted record – bring on next year…

Randy, I saw an number of comments about fans not liking the old Titian uniforms. I was one of them. Was it wishfull thinking or did the Jets actually change their color back to Kelly Green, rather than the darker green/ black they had been wearing? As for the team, this year was too much expectation early. Sanchez and Ryan will get it done. beter to build a great team then a one-year wonder.

how many draft choices we have next year? as usual we wil lbe without a 3rd and 5th. we will never learn .their r no quick fixes in this league. u build a team with the DRAFT
