Tomlinson May Visit Jets Friday, Says Report

Posted by Eric Allen on March 11, 2010 – 1:34 pm

Former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson may visit the Jets on Friday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that LT will meet with the Green & White if he does not sign with the Vikings today in Minnesota. At noon today, the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reported that the Vikings had not signed Tomlinson.

The 30-year-old Tomlinson is a street free agent and can sign with any team. He rushed for a career-low 730 yards last season but still punched it in the end zone 12 times on the ground. In an incredible nine-year run with the ‘Bolts, Tomlinson rushed for 12,490 yards and 138 TDs while catching 530 passes. It should be noted that Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was the QB coach in San Diego from 2002-05, so he has plenty of familiarity with the future Hall of Famer.

The Jets released RB Thomas Jones last Friday and TJ inked a two-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs this week. Shonn Greene is set to return for a second season, Chauncey Washington is also on the roster and Leon Washington is a restricted free agent who received a second-round tender from the Jets.

On Wednesday, the Green & White brought S Brodney Pool in for a visit. The 6’2”, 210-pound Pool collected four interceptions last year with the Browns and has 11 over the course of his five-year career. He was a restricted free agent who wasn’t tendered a contract, so the Jets could add him without having to send Cleveland any compensation.

It also had been reported that the Jets were scheduled to host Marlin Jackson for a visit, but the former Colts DB has joined the Philadelphia Eagles and is scheduled to play safety for the Birds.

L.T. would be an excellent compliment to L.W. & S.G. I hope he is still healthy and can pass the physical. If he has two years left in him I say we gave him a contract of the same scale that T.J. just got in K.C. Go Jets!!!!!!

I really think this would be a very good move for the Jets. He will fit in well, help out Sanchez and Greene…And I am sure defenses will still play us loaded, so it would work out great for the play action especially with LT because he sells it well. Then you go right back to him and he’ll gain a decent 4-5 yards. And with our line and Tony Rich whose to say he won’t go for 1000+yards & 10+ TDs. I hope we sign him.

Been trying to figure out just which way the Jets are going with their signings, but the bottom line appears to be money! Why else would you release a 30 year old RB who was very productive last year, then bring in another 30 year old who was less productive to take his place? As for Pool, I understand he is just one more concussion away from ending his career, so let’s see where that goes.

I would love to get him. I think the man is a lot faster and still has a lot more years in him than Jones does. I hope he signs with us, he will be a great addition with Shonn Greene!

Hey Randy, this sounds like a great move for the Jets to take a shot at LT. He could be a great mentor to Shonn Greene, and C. Washington, possibly Leon also, and as a receiving RB that would help with the pressure on Sanchez. Its about quarter to 3 any word if the Viks’ have done anything? Do you see this happening? Thanx for your time. Go Jets!!

Sign him. The Bolts wanted to become a pass team, use Sproles more and LT had some minor injuries. Stick him behind our OLine and this guy still has juice in the tank. If we get him, I expect 1000yrds even with the load being shared with the other backs.

Please put as much effort with the defensive line as you are with the secondary. We need a pass rush. the only way we could get close to the QB last year was to blitz. We need another big man in the middle of the defense. Jenkins is big and very effective when healthy.

Good move if the money is right. He is a hungry vet and has some understanding of the O.He is a good reciever. He replaces Jones and has more big play ability.

This would be a great pickup if they can make a deal. He is a great RB that can catch in run. With the Jets he would see alot more carries then he would in Minnesota.

  11. By Tom Spicer on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

I would not mind signing him as long as he knows that he is Greene’s backup & he is okay with that. I think going into next year with just Greene & Leon would be a big mistake. We ran the ball 520 times last year we are not going to throw it like crazy we will still run it like 450 times. Greene & Leon can not handle that many runs even if Greene gets 200 runs & Leon gets 100 & plus kickoffs, punts & 3rd down situations that still leaves 150 runs for LT. If used right he can be good for us

Randy, do you of any word of the visit with Brodney Pool? he would be a great addition…

  13. By IRISH JET on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

i dunno about this,we got rid of an old back because he was basically to old. use the picks for the draft and pick up a running back

  14. By originaljetfan on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

i have to assume LT is better than either Shonn or Leon, and he has always been a pretty good receiver. he could fill a nice role as 3rd and long guy, along with a 5 yd and in RB, he can still get into the endzone. keep him at 7-8 carries a game and he might regain some freshness in his legs.

What do you think guys, does he have the protection chops?

  15. By Chris S. on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

Get LT and draft Toby Gerhart…. He is genius, wild cat, all purpose rusher which Jets needed… Rex Ryan will lovvve this kidd….
    get Toby Gerhart….

the thing that kills me. is that why would we just drop tj and turn around and sign another back that had a bad year and that is in question if he has it anymore. but yet you never know in the nfl.

ive been a jet fan since they came into the league so i know the up and downs of this team. im very happy that we are going again to have that great defense but whats going on with the defence what is tannebaum thinking we have i running back????? a rookie who had a great last few games, but how can you let jones go i know its money but didnt we give a rookkie qb 50 mil comon, now im seeing that we are going to lose washington also money . mr t remember no backup qb, or are we going to win with

  22. By BriGuyinFL on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

A lot more goes into the running game than just the running back themselves. TJ was a very good and strong back but lacked breakaway speed. I think LT has more of the latter and if we limitted his carries could be a game changer. I am a little worried after seeing him pout on the sidelines the last time we beat the chaaahjas. Just my opinion but I am confident that if we put a decent RB back there, our running game with be just fine. How many more days till the draft?

  23. By Eric Allen on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

Skoot39, We’ve heard nothing new on the LT front, other than that the Vikings have said they don’t feel any pressure to sign LaDainian Tomlinson today.

  24. By dave on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

looks like TL is kinda out of gas to me. Id rather draft a RB than hire one who has taken too many hits. Take a look at what he did against the jets in the playoffs – as opposed to a younger guy like ced. benson! The jets need to start signing some street free agents. are we letting m douglas walk because we have someone else in mind? love the cromartie trade, glad to have hartsock back but we need more. I would be happy to have poole, but we still would need a DE, a WR, a RB & another CB!

  25. By Eric Allen on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

Michael, we still can’t confirm anything, sorry, but the reports were that Brodney Pool did visit the Jets.

  26. By Eric Allen on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

jbork, LaDainian Tomlinson began his visit with the Vikings on Wednesday night, according to reports. We were passing on that he hadn’t signed as of noon today.

  27. By Jeff on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

Get this done already. Jets need 3 good RB’s. Chauncey isn’t really proven and I don’t know about anyone else but I don’t think we can be sure Leon will be as effective as he was before his broken leg. Jets will likely run A LOT again this year so a vet like LT would help to ease the pressure on the other guys. Anyone know what’s up with Fargas from Oakland? I heard he got released and didn’t know if he was injured or what.

Ok L-T coming in Fri sounds good to me guess we’re going to check the wheels kick the tires, if good & can get it for a discounted price I say do it .. I would like to see T-.O come in right after L-T ..I know what lots will say lets take this into account though even at 36 hes big strong physical still has speed & can get him cheap T-O & L-T for 1 year will definitely help this team win not to mention both have vast experience I say go 4 it

  29. By JaKe on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

First of all, LT would be a enormous pick up. I love Shonn Greene, and Leon… But I honestly dont think Shonn Will be ready for all these carrys, Leon will beast it when he’s back on the field.. As For LT…..Look at how San diego ripped away the run plays from LT. This line he was with was falling apart. LT Most deffinatly has enough Gas in the tank to be a number 1 back, and would be VERY good as a jet. The O-line that “we” have on the jets carried TJ very much. Need a good veteren RB to help

  30. By Daniel on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

I personally like the idea of LT being a Jet. He has had some great success int he past seasons and still has some gas left in the tank. If he can stay healthy the he can help head the 3 headed rushing attack while sharing carries with Shonn and Leon. Plus by adding LT the Jets will have another seasoned and talented back to help Shonn and leon progress even father in their careers. Ultimately LT is a better back than Thomas and it would be a good move after releasing TJ earlier this year.

As you all know, I’m not big on these older FAs but I have to admit, a secondary of DR, AC, JL, and Sharper, with ES, DL, DC, and a high draft pick doesn’t sound too bad. Same for SG, a healthy Leon, LT, a high-drafted RB, T-Rich, and C-Wash. TJ may have more left as a runner than LT but LT catches passes and is okay with being a back-up and TJ wasn’t, so if he comes cheap we could do worse. Sharper still seems to be in his prime but won’t be in 2 yrs so we’d still have to draft an RB and a DB.

  32. By j-rod on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

are some of u comparing TJ to LT? No we didn’t get rid of TJ cause he is old, we got rid of him because he is the most robotic rb who survived behind a great o-line and who’s going to command money when he’s average at best. The dude can’t even go north to west without being tackled in the backfield. Now da other 30 year old can play, remember the dude who was in the nike commer a two, three years ago and everyone wanted? Jus caus he’s thirty u don’t want him? He’l b a sure upgrade from TJ.

  33. By ddh on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

If we sign LT for two years we can focus our first selection on the best pass rusher, even spend other picks to move up, then go for value, if its a RB, S,WR so be it. LT has good character and and has value on the field and off not to mention his experience and mentoring possibilities.

  34. By J-rod on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

I just can’t believe the people getting upset over losing TJ. The guy benefited from good year of play from the o-line. If there was no good line, where would Jones be? He has no creativity and really plays his age. I know LT gets the short end of the stick becau of his lack of playoff success, but a change of scenery may help him. We’re not asking him to be a beast which I wouldn’t mind, but to be more creative and versitle than Jones, which LT’s age shouldn’t hinder. The guy is thirty

I really dont want LT on the team , he is not a team player down the stretch , he sits on sidelines pouting and should be in there giving his all in crunch time , we need to get a back up QB asap to give us a chance to protect our offense down the stretch !

I called it it’s official we just signed B-pool NICE VERY NICE B-P 6-3 215 A-C 6-2 203 try adding L-T -T-O or some how some way D-Sharper not to mention a 1st- 2 seconds- 4th- 5th -6th round picks who would question any Moves Mike-T has made to this point not me …Rex was seen at alabama’s pro day he looks to be interested in Griffin I Still like Navarro Bowman

I’ve got 0 interest in L.T . He’s Finished . He will never cut it in the AFC East . This division is too tough. I’d rather roll the dice with some rookie.

  41. By 37 year fan on Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

We should make the call to Larry Johnson . Before Shanahan signs him . What’s the harm in a meeting? We got a much better line than Washingtons’ got. … Larrys’ a better back.

  42. By Mike Jet Vet on Mar 12, 2010 | Reply

Cont> ((correction)) I said Rex is attending Alabama’s pro day looking at Griffin, oops my bad I meant Roland Mcclain LB or maybe Terrence Cody NT to backup big Jenks .. I believe L-T is more elusive can still take it to the house good out of the backfield catching screen Passes is what he brings to the dance over T-J .. I also believe a change of scenery will energize & encourage him & play with a whole new vigor

  43. By Ed in Tucson on Mar 12, 2010 | Reply

We got rid of TJ cause he was too old for the $. Mr T was hoping to be able to re-sign him for less$ Depending on the $, LT could be a better value. I understand why some are upset about letting TJ go but this is the business side of the NFL, you can’t get emotionally attached to the players. Easy enough to say but I’m still upset that Lamont Jordan got away before getting a chance to shine for the Jets :( LT could easily cruise to 1,000 yds behind Mangold & Co. Go Jets!

we have a great defense and a really good offensive line. sp team is good..
WR are as good as their QB makes them be. But what we really missing is the missing link BACKUP QB. Last year when sanchez when down, what happen? Our backup for some what years came in and fumble. If we going to have a chance we need a proven BACKUP QB. I know clemens is a great team mate and does good in pre-season and everyone loves him. But that doesnt help us at all IF sanchez was to go down for a couple of games

Its funny how quickly people 4get, TJ is an awesome back n the jets are gonna miss him ! In his 1st yr with the jets i believe thats when the o-line was strugglin n we were in shambles with 2 qbs rotatin (no disrespect to chad pennington he is class) but he still managed to provide a sufficient running game, and every1 was happy to c the upgrade on the line during his second year with the jets bcoz they knew how special he was. Now all of a sudden he is washed up, cmon guys dnt h8 he has been gd

  46. By Rickie New York on Mar 12, 2010 | Reply

IRA – I completely agree and I wouldnt be suprised at all if the Jets move up as they have the last few years. Personally I like Sergio Kindle the OLB from Texas. Pass rush is definately the priority. Also not a bad signing with pool , but they still need more at safety. I read today that if the Rams dont reach a long term deal with ATOGWE he will become a UFA on june 1st and can sign with any team – THATS THE PLAYMAKER WE NEED! Go get em Mr. T! …… and GO JETS!!!

  47. By Rickie New York on Mar 12, 2010 | Reply

C’mon guys – REALLY think about it – we didn’t see that same burst from TJ last year , the long runs were noticably missing. He rarely got to the secondary without being caught and was tackled in the backfield more than usual. He also wore down by the end of the season. Also remember B4 last yr he threatened to sit out for MORE money. HE refused to rework his deal. LT is 2 yrs younger, a better receiver and behind the Jets O-line will be the better back period.

  48. By ray on Mar 12, 2010 | Reply

I love Rex’s mind set, he going 2 try 2 pick up LT, instead of staying w TJ, why ? cuz he is going to sign a veteran RB w speed, TJ had speed but nt like LT. So its a steal 2 pick up LT, cuz if u can’t beat us, join us. The only thing I worry about is that he gets hurt when it gets close 2 playoff time. LT wants a ring & 2 be on a championship team, cuz time is running 4 LT. GO JETS……..BLEED 4 GREEN 4 EVER… LOVE U GUYS……

I know we blitz a lot, but i think we need a player who cant put his head down and get some kind of pressure on the QB without us blitzing. (Gholston step up to plate plz) if we had that our defense could possibly be one of the best ever to play in the NFL.

  50. By Mike Jet Vet on Mar 12, 2010 | Reply

My opinion on signing B-Pool ..yes 4 concussions is a reason for concern guessing he likes to hit has more speed and at a forth of K-R salary doesn’t make sense not to scoop this guy up

  51. By Row on Mar 13, 2010 | Reply

I would never trade TJ for LT for any reason. This is probably going to be the dumbest switch in football when LT signs. (yes, he will sign) LT has lost his cutback ability, speed and explosiveness. (ankle injury) It has reoccurred every year after the original onset. HORRIBLE MOVE ONCE AGAIN MR. T. You say it’s for money, but you sign another 30+ running back who’s lost more then a step for more money. GET TERRELL OWENS, HE CAN ACTUALLY HELP THE TEAM! GO JETS
