LT, Greene Team Up to Ground & Pound

Posted by Eric Allen on August 27, 2010 – 11:44 pm

The Jets are expected to have a more balanced offensive attack in 2010, but don’t expect them to go away from Ground & Pound anytime soon. In the final summer dress rehearsal for the starters tonight, the Green & White’s run game looked to be in midseason form against the Redskins as LaDainian Tomlinson, a shifty and explosive future Hall of Famer, and Shonn Greene, a bulldozer in just his second season, proved to be a prolific pair.

In three quarters of work, Tomlinson and Greene combined for 142 yards on the ground. They were effective immediately as the 5’11”, 226-pound Greene rushed three times on the Jets’ opening drive for 18 yards. That helped them get out of the gates with an early lead as Nick Folk was true from 45 yards.

But it was Tomlinson who electrified fans with a charge of his own, displaying his legendary footwork and vision as he got free off left tackle for a 43-yard boost.

“We’re going to work well together,” Tomlinson said of him and Greene. “As you can see, he comes in and runs over people and pounds people, and I come in and slash, so we’re thunder and lightning. That’s what we’re going to be.”

That 43-yard chunk was Tomlinson’s 15th touch of the preseason — the most ever for the former Charger in his 10-year NFL career.

“It was a zone scheme and I cut it back. The line did a great job of pushing everybody back. Once I cut it back, I had the safety coming downhill and I knew he was coming too fast to be able to tackle me once I made a move on him,” he said. “I made the move on him and kind of hit my receiver a little bit, trying to get behind him and kept my balance and was able to get up the field.”

Despite turning 31 in June, Tomlinson is a man on a mission and he brings a big-play capability the Jets didn’t have in the backfield when they opened the 2009 regular season. With less than five minutes remaining in the opening half, LT got low and bounced out to the edge while gaining 16 yards up the left sideline. Then with just seconds before intermission, his 14-yard scamper out of a shotgun draw allowed New York’s AFC representative to attempt a 62-yard Folk field goal.

When the Jets signed Tomlinson in the offseason to join an emerging force in Greene, many wondered who would start. But it looks like the Jets have two No. 1 backs capable of doing damage and sharing the load. In the first half, Greene carried eight times for 36 yards and Tomlinson also got eight carries for a scintillating 85 yards.

“What we did today was great,” Greene said. “I think we can do a lot better than that if we played the whole game and wore the defense down. We’ll be a dangerous combination.”

Trailing, 9-5, with 6:46 left in the third, Rex Ryan elected to keep his first offense in for one final possession. The result was the starters’ second TD in the preseason as a 15-play, 72-yard march took the home team into the fourth quarter and ended on a scoring hookup from Mark Sanchez to Dustin Keller. But Greene and Tomlinson figured prominently once again with Greene rushing twice for 16 yards to get the drive going and then No. 21 getting exactly 9 on a third-down catch to keep the chains moving inside the red zone.

“That was a big play. We obviously needed that to put points on the board. Anytime you’re in third-down situations, we’re thinking first down and continue that drive,” said Tomlinson as the Jets got to the ‘Skins 11. “I knew that the guys had kind of got out of there and they were going to leave me room to work. Once Mark threw it to me, I turned around and saw a couple of guys but I was able to get to the first-down marker before I got tackled.”

Even though the running game got on track, the Jets’ ones turned the ball over twice in opposing territory and the Green & White didn’t throw the ball consistently. But they can again hang their hat on another solid rush performance as last year’s No. 1 ground attack — which didn’t used slash weapon Brad Smith in the backfield in preseason play — averaged a healthy 5.0 yards on 32 carries.

“One thing I think people need to understand is we’ve been very vanilla this preseason,” said Tomlinson, who called the Jets line the best he’s been around. “We’ve run basic plays, and I know at times it doesn’t look like we’re doing very good, but these are basic plays we’re running so we’re executing them. We won’t really game-plan until the season starts, so we’re doing fine.”

Ladanian Tomlinson is a monster and i’m a Shonn Greene fan. I think I might start beliving in Vernon Gholston?

Damien Woody looked like doo-doo and Ducasse almost got Sanchez killed. I’m not totally convinced he’s 100% after that hit.

This left guard position is scary. I understand why they letFaneca go, but in an uncapped year couldn’t we have kept him for one more year? This could be the one mistake we made that comes back to bite us hard. Unfortunately it still seems we are a QB away. I know the plays are basic and all of that, but there are still too many mistakes made. I’m not worried about the scoring, but I am worried about all the turnovers. Calvin Pace getting hurt is a real disappointment, he is a beast looking to have a monster year. I hope the injury isn’t too serious.

I won’t go as overboard as our friend Row (as if anyone could ever hope to do that), but vanilla, non-game plans or not, there’s no excuse for the O not putting more points on the board by the third pre-season game. And I’ll be the first to admit that if Clemens had played this summer like Brunell has, I’d be calling for his head. I get the mentoring aspect with Brunell but he’s shown almost nothing on the field. Some individual bright spots withiin a mediocre picture, even on O. LT, obviously, showing he might have quite a bit left. Notice also how as in just about every game he’s played as a Jet (and unlike TJ at this point in his career), Greene doesn’t need longer runs to keep his average up. The guy gets yards in 6, 8, and 10 yard chunks. New guys like Wilson on D still look good and that was the most I’ve seen from Pool, though Grossman is no McNabb and Kolb next week isn’t much of a test either. So for the bigger picture, I say if Sanchez can’t get about 25 points a game on the board this year with all these new guys on O plus the returning ones, I’ll be calling for Ainge to compete for the job next year just like I wanted him to this year. And now can we stop the ridiculous obsession with Revis and paying him enough money to bail out New Jersey? It’s obvious we’ve got plenty of other needs at other positions and those guys have to be paid, too.

Clarke W. Didn’t get to see the game up here in New Hampshire( I’m surrounded by he enemy Patriot fans). I will watch replay game on NFL station I will watch for the Damien Woody and Ducasse things that you mentioned and the hit Sanchez took.
I wasn’t sold on VG either but he is a class act to volunteer a pay cut because he was not performing up to his standards that my friend is a PROFESSIONAL. Didn’t miss that “extortionis”t -as per 64 Tom (Revis). if the Jets get an improved pass rush this year – let Revis watch from the sidelines. J.E.T.S. JETS! JETS! JETS!

This team will have to continue to focus the bulk of its offensive loan on the RBs…..I don’t believe Sanchez is anywhere near ready to be throwing the ball all over the yard….You have to hold your breath evertime he drops back……Ground and Pound mustr remain in full effect…..

Clarke, Agree i think Sanchez was hurt on that play and was wearing a wrap on his upper rt arm/shoulder later on. I am not happy at all with what i saw last night. Yes LT was great, Pace was real active until he got hurt [this is going to hurt them] Keller, the always money J-Co and Leonhard. Even VG is playing well like i thought he would if moved to DE. Red flags, Sanchez is too inconsistent again very much like most of last year until the playoffs,he is still locking in on WR’s. Sure they ran the ball for 161 yds which is great. My biggest worry is they avg running the ball 39 times per game last year. Without adding in some WC by Smith, Greene and LT can’t give you 35 carries per game for 16 games. They MUST have a 3rd RB to get a few carries per game. Its not McNight right now. Like i thought in June he is not ready yet. Washington should be the answer. If not then they better sign a RB off waivers later on. 2 RB’s are not going to cut it and even with all the WR threats they have Sanchez right now is not ready to have all the games put on his back to carry this team. The D looks good even without Revis. Also Brick is off his game and it has to be from his concerns about the LG next to him. They now have 2 weeks to get ready for the ravens and LOTS OF WORK TO DO.

Were still a ground and pound machine, L.T. is on a mission,Charger’s drop the ball on that one, Sanchez will get better like he did last year in the playoffs, but we still need Revis to be dominant.

Come back Revis! Honestly i dont think our pass defense was that bad but I feel like it would be a huge morale boost to get your best player back. Honestly we got to get this guy signed and quick!

Jets Fan Since ’64 Tom, Please enough with your fetish for Eric Ainge. He is probably done as a Jet. He is the David Clowney of QBs. Sanchez is nothing more than an average QB. And Ira, Sanchez may never carry this team. on his back He didn’t doit last year and he is not ready to do it this year. The running game is their prime weapon. If someone goes down they may, I repeat may, be in trouble. Look at what some of the other teams are doing with scoring in the last 2 games. The Packers 59 & 27, Saints 36 & 38, Pats 32 & 28 and the Jets 9 & 11. One TD in the last 2 games. Our DBs were beat several times but Washington’s QBs missed wide-open receivers. So lets not give the “D” too much credit. After all it was the Redskins without Donovan McNabb.

    Al Davis already has a cornerback at 15mil/season;
noone else will be close. Soon the media will be renaming Revis Island …. ‘Fantasy Island’.

You know whats funny Ira and I posted this months ago. Without a stud LG Brick is going to struggle He was awful when either Faneca or Kendall where not playing next to him. Letting Faneca go this offseason and owing him all that money and having to pay it anyway was dumb and will hurt them this year. Folk missing a PAT not the game difference but the kind of hurtburn he is going to cause this year.

Sanchez has not matured or gotten better as all the propagandists have blurted all summer. Rex better get back in control of this kid or we will have a repeat of last season. I said it before this O will struggle to score 20 per game. If LT continues to play like this he will be the best acquistion of the offseason.

VG is doing a great job as well as the rest of the D and without Revis will be fine. There is no way Tanwoody should give in to this guy and if they can get a couple of first round picks for him I would trade him and save the money for all the other players we will need to sign this off season.

have not seen game yet, have to watch NFL network today.sounds like I may have to make some interesting statements concerning this team. All I know is the jets are going into the season minus Holmes, Revis, Pace, and Ropati.Hopefully they can add depth on DLine with first cuts coming.my only question right now is did the jets now that this Revis situation would last this long and that is why they selected Wilson on draft day instead of maybe dealing up for My Man Best, concussions and all.

Good comments Tom/64 and Frank. As for Mr. Green throwing Ainge under the bus, just remember Woody’s daughter struggled with the dark side and he didn’t give up on her did he? We all know Erik is the NFL arm on the team…what we need from him is the maturity to know his day will come if he stays healthy and focused on a career with the Jets. Addiction is a disease, not something Mr. Green sees as the end of one’s dreams.

It will be a very interesting to see how the season unraveled. Will it be 3-0 or 0-3? Will need a lot of help from the fans in the first two games at home.

  19. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Aug 28, 2010 | Reply

Mr. Green, that was actually a bit of a tongue-in-cheek joke meant to emphasize how lame Sanchez looks, i.e. if we need Ainge to go up against him we’re in trouble. It looks to me like Ainge will have a very hard time getting back in the NFL. I hear ya, charliejet, and I don’t think we should be worrying about any one guy sitting out when we’ve got questions at more than a few other spots and a few other key guys who’ll be out as GaryC says. As for Revis, he’s his own problem. Anyone who could watch the team in these three games and just sit there repeating his selfish demands obviously doesn’t care about the team. I think if we trade him to some lowly team next year, you may see that he doesn’t care about any team. I’m not thrilled with what I see of McKnight at RB and I don’t know if Washington is the answer there but I’ll say it again, this team often doesn’t play guys enough to find out what they can do. Anyone who’s ready to write off McKnight or Allison, much less Sanchez, so early just doesn’t understand what it takes to build a real football player.

In other news, Jedi Mind Control comes to the NFL. Read the story about Jackson on the NFL website, about how he’s “in it for the long haul,” about how he “misses football” but has to ask for an astronomical amount of money at the expense of the Chargers and, increasingly and incredibly, himself. Can you guess with what Jet holdout Jackson shares agents? I picture him and Revis on the phone to reporters wearing headsets like telemarketers reading from a script that they barely understand but are obligated to follow. As has famously been said, character is destiny, and I don’t think the character of these two players speaks very well of their destinies.

  21. By Jets Fan Since '64 Tom on Aug 28, 2010 | Reply

P.S. I meant to compare Jackson and Revis to inept telemarketers, not talented ones, I’ve met some very good ones both over the phone and when I briefly worked the job myself in a struggle to survive bad economic times. In fact, when I worked as a telemarketer, there was a guy who came in every day in his #10 (for Chad) Jet jersey, who talked about nothing but the Jets, who saw his entire world through Jets football, kind of like a Jets version of the guy Ray Davies sings about on the Kinks’ “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy.” The job paid $8.50 an hour (this was less than a year ago) plus some bonus system so complicated that they could cheat you out of your bonus money whenever they wanted to. If you lived more than a few miles away from the call center (and I did), buying the gas to drive there every day ate up half your pay. If you took public transportation (which takes forever in L.A.) to get there, you had no time to work your second and sometimes third job. And yet NOTHING could stop this guy from spending his last disposable dime or minute on anything related to the Jets. I wonder if Jackson and Revis have ever even talked to a guy like that…

watching jet offense I thought they outlawed the screen but I saw washington use it to win game so I guess it still exists.the accolades heaped on gholston in this game I don’t get, Rodrique Wright was more involved.why does gholston drop his head like a bull when he is rushing.how is he going to locate the ball carrier.are we done with allison and clowney yet.Did Brunell play for marty shottenheimer in wash. Rex must be doing him a favor by passing him down the line to his son now.the jets by default have to have a backup qb.now for some appraising .If jets played a four three, and he put on another 15 pounds Ihedibo would be a perfect weakside linebacker, speed and hitting ability.

There are always a lot of complaints following Jet losses, even in preseason, mine is once again about the QB play. I complained about it last week after a win, this game did nothing but reinforce that concern. I sure hope there is something in this offense that Rex is holding back in preseason, if not we are in trouble! Sanchez does not look very good, let’s be honest. But if he should go down for any period of time I think it will be game over. I never agreed with the signing of Brunell, I think there were better options. Once again we see no Clowney, no Allison, no Woodhead, no C.Washington, but we did see another McKnight fumble that cost this game. Believe me, if all of the players who are a virtual lock to make the team were going out there and burning the barn I would have no complaints, but that has not been the case. The only thing that impressed me in this game was the play of Greene and LT. That will not be enough to get it done.

  24. By scjoe on Aug 28, 2010 | Reply

For anyone else who is keeping track, besides me, Weatherford- a stunning 33yd average on his five punts. Folk- no KO into the end zone along with his missed extra pt. try. But still no competition in camp for either. I believe that no matter how much you build a player up in the press, or at press conferences (Sanchez, Folk, even Gholston who I really want to succeed, they have to prove it on the field, if they don’t there should be changes made. As one of our former coaches ranted in one of his pressers, “you have to play to win the game!” No matter what it takes or even more important WHO it takes. We often hear the cliche that “we will play the best players” not only by Rex but by most coaches, but think about it, is that really the case? If Washington and McKnight were on an even playing field would the decision of which one stays and which one goes be the same?

  25. By scjoe on Aug 28, 2010 | Reply

GaryC, of the players you mentioned who will probably miss the opening game, or games, Revis, Pace, Holmes and Ropati, I think the only one we should be concerned about is Revis, no matter how we feel as individuals about his holdout. I think that Taylor will fill in well for Pace if he loses any time. Cotchery is no slouch either filling in for Holmes. But Revis?? Who is going to replace him? Cromartie looked just a little shaky out there today for my taste, Wilson has been very impressive, but is still only a rookie and is still learning.

  26. By scjoe on Aug 28, 2010 | Reply

Given the state of the offense, I don’t think we could have started the year off any worse then by playing Balt. Even the next two with NE and at Miami will be tests given the fact they both know our offense very well. Add in the fact we will be missing Holmes and it makes for some butterfly’s churning around in the old bread basket. The D will have to be at it’s absolute best to win all three or at least two of the three. Right now I believe 99% of all Jet fans have a little more confidence in the D then they do in the O.

  27. By JOHN AVVENTO on Aug 28, 2010 | Reply

This team better talk a little less and get the offensive mess taken care of. This is why I hate pre-season; U dont get as many reps as u would like in the games because of fear of injury, yet the one game thats a true dress rehearsal and the players see significant time, we lose our best LB and pass rusher. The Jets pass rush stinks and they get nowheres near the qb without throwing the kitchen sink at the offense. Thats a problem and it can only be adressed by drafting an outside rusher, like a Jerry Hughes or Sergio Kindle and Koa Misi this past April, yet in rd 2 they opted for a project lineman thats gettin his head handed to him by first string defenses. There were many pure guards available at that pick if they wanted to go Oline that would have been more secure. lastly, there were some breaks in the secondary-lucky moss dropped that 50yarder. GET REVIS BACK IN OR EVERYTHING U GUYS DID THIS OFF-SEASON MEANT NOTHING!!! UNREAL! 35YRS AND IM SETTING MYSELF UP 4 ANOTHER BIG FALL. THE QB PLAYS THIS SEASON LIKE HE HAS THIS PRE SEASON AND SAY HELLO TO 6 AND 10!

  28. By IRA on Aug 28, 2010 | Reply

Frank, You were right. As long as they had to pay Faneca the 5 mill they should’ve kept him at least until the end of camp. They saved no money either way and yes it has effected Brick’s game right now. Hope they can get this fixed. I still trust Callahan and think he will get it fixed. Remember they are not game planing at all but i gues thats just an excuse.
You have to cut Sanchez some slack but he must use better judgement. He does have a good thing going with Keller, J-Co and Edwards. My biggest concern is i don’t think Greene and LT can give you 40 carries per game for 16 weeks. Thye need to factor in another RB. Who that is is the ?.
Love VG’s progress and hope it continues. Once again no pressure unless they blitz.
While Brunell looks bad its not fair to judge because he hasn’t played in a game with the ones. Still Kellen has had a better preseason. Its going to be real interesting to see what happens.

After last game I realize Sanchez needs few more years to become more proficient. Also I am looking forward to watch the next episode of little-knock on Wednesday, hardly was a hard-knock game. Revis or not if we cannot score points we are not gone to win more than five games.

TMac, thank you for your smart and sensitive comment on Ainge. Part of my confusion is that I don’t know what this rehab thing is about, what kind of addiction it is, or if it has anything to do with his suspension two years ago. I’d like to think he’ll get another chance somewhere but I don’t think it’ll be here, if mostly because we seem to think we have to win the Super Bowl this year or it’s all over. Luis, my favorite post of the day is yours. Injuries and holdouts on D, no matter who they involve, are nothing compared to an offense that can’t put points on the board.

rex ryan talks too much and seems lazy to me. he watched as they got rid of thomas jones, faneca and now he is watching as they play with with the revis thing. plz rex put some pressure on ur bosses as the coach to get ur star player on the filed. stop trying too hard to please tennabaum. in the end the coach takes the most heat. also y havent shotty find ways to use woodhead and chauncy wash. should carry some load in that offense. the jets players all seemed too non commital and non serious. think rex is playing too friendly.

Revis wll sign. Jackson is another story. He can sit the entire season he is going to be suspended for 4 games anyway maybe more. Its a different situation. Still think 35 mill guaranteed no matter what the rest of the contract is gets him in camp. After watching the tape Slauson is doing a good job blocking and pulling in the run game. The o-line though does seem to be out of sync in the passing game. Its really more inconsistent than anything else. On the plays they completed passes Sanchez looked fine. Schotty is going to have to dial back the play calling again. Maybe bring back that green, yellow, red system for the start of the season.
    GO JETS!!!!

Guys, the Jets have added a new starting receiver, tailback, left guard, and added two rookies on offense who will all need time to learn to mesh and play together, as well as learn to build team chemistry off the field. That is just on offense! Look at our new our defensive backfield is also! These guys will come into their own. Sanchez said n the post-game interview that the jets offense has not developed their identity yet. This is a major statement! All I’m saying is remember Shonn Greene, remember how Revis developed, how Sanchez played in the playoffs, how ‘Brick made it to his first pro bowl. This is a long season. McKnight will develop just like Greene did and so will Ducasse. Patience is a virtue jets fans! All I’m saying is, and you’ve heard it here first, TEN WINS WILL GET US TO THE PLAYOFFS PLAYING IN OUR HOME STADIUM! So go through the schedule and it won’t be hard to find 10 wins the combination of our defense, special teams, and our developing offense will take. JETS WILL get it done in 2010!

Looking at this preseason so far I think two things have had a hugh effect on this team. Hard Knocks is a major distraction. These guys all have big ego and want to be center stage. The football concentration is not their only priority. Secondly the Revis situation is ripping players apart even though they won’t admit it. I am sure there are players angry with Revis and many players on his side. If he signs soon it may be a calming effect on the team. As much as I dislike what he is doing, if they don’t sign him soon it could be a very long and disappointing season.

  35. By GaryC on Aug 29, 2010 | Reply

scjoe, to thiink the jets will not miss Pace that much is wishful thinking. Taylor passed his prime 5 years ago.Gholston still cannot rush the passer and when we blitz opening night against baltimore we will be leaving Bolden, Heap and others one on one with this secondary which has shown holes in the preseason.Just remember the Ravens have a pretty good offensive line and Flacco stands in the pocket and doesn’t panic.

I retract my statement …you guys worry to much, ..well now I’m worried every team I’ve watch with the exception of Dallas looks ready on D-and -O 2 games into preseason thinking maybe we’ll try some new plays new guys kick the tires see how it go’s but 3 games in we’re not ready.. I BELIEVE THE REVIS SITUATION AND HARD KNOCKS COMING TO TOWN has in part disrupted and distracted camp team and their concentration that being said my concerns since last season have been and still remain Sanchez V-G Kicking game both FG KO Lowery Clemens now we sign Brunell talk about out of the frying pan into the fire …anyone believing losing Pace won’t hurt this team is crazy good points Tom 64 TMac I agree with you about Ainge I also believe given the opportuity from the few plays I’ve seen in preseason and college he has talent enough to at least be given a chance come on in reality we couldn’t have done any worst at QB to this point its all politics

To Frank, 10and6jets, Mr. Green, GaryC, MJV, and others, I think you’re all shining light on the various reasons that we — that is, Rex and a few of his players — should talk less and execute more. We’ve got all kinds of new guys, at least one key injury, a truly weird holdout, and we’re looking fairly mediocre in pre-season. And yet the only stories in the press seem to be about Rex’s big mouth, whether or not we’ll make it to the Super Bowl, and how we’re inflicting cruel and unusual punishment on Revis by not paying him what would buy us four other star players. Throw in the useless (unless you see more hype as useful) distraction of “Hard Knocks” and you don’t have the focused, disciplined start to the season that I envisioned after we almost beat the Colts. Time to get serious.

If I see one more newspaper clipping “LT a bright spot for the offense”. I want the
WHOLE offense to be a bright spot. Which would you rather see a “bright spot” with 1,200 yards rushing and a team record 9-7 for 2010 or a balanced team with balanced attack and a 11-5 record. I hate these teasers – the offense is NOT clicking too well and LT (he is looking good and that is great) but once again one man does not a team make. Revis – stay home! Go JETS ! !

I have said it earlier I was not feeling the Jets and there Big Talk after seeing the Giants/Jets game they were plain out flat. the panther game was disgusting and worrisome, the skins was even funnier in a sad way, thank goodness Mcnabb was out it would have been disastrous for the Jets. I honestly hope this is some sort of incognito way of not showing anyone (even us fans) the True talent we keep hearing about and how ready everyone is.there has been no excitement from this offense yet. no delivery of game plan or the ability to execute consistent play, and if Sanchez gets hurt I have 0 confidence in Brunell.I hope this is some joke on the division and the league, and come week 1 vs the Ravens we see this Jets Football Rex keep talking about, because I agree with MJV the scores put up by the opposition is crazy and all we can muster is what 31 points in 3 games total. if so we are in for a long long disappointing season.

Speaking of the running game, this goes out to Row and others who are so sure we were foolish to lose TJ and Leon. TJ went 10 for 30 this week, while the three backs who are now ahead of him on KC all gained more yards at much higher averages (Battle 10 for 49, McCluster 8 for 47, Charles 6 for 40). Leon went a whopping 6 for 16, which is the same kind of numbers McKnight’s been putting up. Meanwhile, we all saw what LT and Greene did this week. Do stats in one exhibition game mean anything all that much? Not unless you’re Row, so live by the sword, die by the sword, Row. Or maybe chill out and wait a year or two before calling the loss of TJ and Leon and the pick of McKnight so disastrous.

losing pace is a rough turn of events I still don’t know how serious it is but I hope it’s not more than 2 games at most he is our only sack threat besides corner blitzing we deffinately need him along with Revis nervous heading in

I’m hoping that we’re only seeing part of our O in the preseason. Schotty said that he planned to use B Smith a lot more this year. The BS Package was a big factor in the Jets’ reaching the playoffs last year. If MS can’t move the ball, BS is going to have to dazzle ‘em with his brilliance.
Last year I said VG should be moved back to DE, I’m glad Coachasaurus Rex agreed. I also said that former Wildcat Folk would hit his stride & have a good year, he seems to be on his way. I love the Terminator! LT & SG will make a good combo.
Sanchez needs much improvement before he can lead us to the SB; forget about “opening up” the O into a flying circus. Pound & Ground & BS razzle-dazzle is the way we’re going to win games; that & Tenacious D.

We have cut strong leaders, Jones ,Faneca….brought in a nice guy but completely inept back up QB…..what is going on? Is Brunell the answer to ‘maturing’ Sanchez? I think not. Weak O line equals an injury for Sanchez at the worst, a gun shy Sanchez at best. Look back at tape of Clemens when we threw him to the wolves with a crappy O line. If Sanchez goes down and we dont have Clemens to plug in…..the season is toast. True justice will be if Jets release Clemens and NE picks him up the next day.

Ira you must be kidding? Should have kept Faneca at least until the end of Training Camp? You and Frank can disagree with the move all you want. But once the Jets decided they weren’t going to keep him, letting him go when they did was exactly the right thing to do. Had they kept him until the end of camp, then imagine going into the season making that change. I would rather have Brick struggling now and working on getting better than to deal with it when it is GO time. The running has been fine and they can slide someone over there to help out on that side if needed.

I agree that “Hard Knocks” is a distraction, all players have egos, concentration is not there. Heck, Woody Johnson is also on the act, he’s doing his Jerry Jones impersonation, getting more air time than all the players. All of your comments make good pts, but, its only the 3rd PRE-SEASON game Jet nation. Im sure that R Ryan and staff will put the best possible Jet team on the feild to WIN… If this was the 3rd regular season game then i would be worried..Until then go J-E-T-S… JETS JETS JETS….

GaryC, my point was Revis will be the one who is missed the most. Yes Taylor may be passed his prime but is not by any means finished, and I am saying that even thought I am not a big J Taylor fan, for obvious reasons. But I think that a Taylor Westerman combination will get the job done at OLB until Pace comes back. Gholston won’t come in to play because he is now a DE. I like Pace myself, but if you think he is a “dynamic” pass rusher you are fooling yourself.

I was pretty unimpressed with what I heard of the offense after Friday night (didn’t follow the game closely, just read the recaps). I honestly expected them to come out clicking after all of the talk from the first two weeks, so I guess it’s back to the old “wait and see” as far as on-field performance.

As for the Jets’ half of the Holdout Twins (courtesy of Schwartz & Feinsod, purveyors of dissatisfaction and disgruntlement), I couldn’t really care less. You don’t need to lead statistical categories to win games, you need to score points. Last year, the whole Number One Defense thing was just a consolation prize for not winning games. It’s nice to have a player (and/or a unit) that makes headlines, but I’d rather lead the division in wins and go from there. Holding your opponents to two or three field goals is nice and all, but if you still lose because you can’t top it, well…

i’m really pleased with our defense so far this preseason even though we dont have revis we are not a 6-10 team where still easily 10-6 and im not too confident in sanchez he honestly looks like a inmature pretty boy thats more worried about being on magazines and hooking up with hot models then what he is on playing ball i hold my breath everytime he drops back throws the ball or gets hit he might get the job done sooner or later but i dont believe hes gonna be our savior at the QB position. well thats my thoughts.

Great post about winning trumping stats, Gregg, and I also agree with you, Ray, about making the change on the O line now. When it comes to guys like Faneca, Jones, Leon, Rhodes, etc., it seems pretty obvious that there’s no room for sentimentality. A Jet team that actually plays the guys it drafts and trades for is the one I want to see because you don’t get to the Super Bowl without doing that.

Well at least Sanchez learned how to slide this year – guess that is progress – isn’t it?

Sanchez will mature – lets not forget, that he played in only 16 games for USC. Another way of looking at it -Sanchez had more HIGH SCHOOL experience than college experience. Speaking of figures – after all is said and done, Revis is demanding approximately 1/10 of a billion dollars.

  53. By Ablity on Aug 29, 2010 | Reply

Forget revis. this is not just about this year, this a about a team that has no history of winning way. well for a team to be a winning team. the owners have to 100 percent control the money side of thing and the coaches has to 100 percent control the football side of things that’s how winning teams are build. if the jets are ever going to be a winning team, they cannot let players have any upper hand in any part of the money or the football size. like any other successful program there has to be clear cut, leader. there show be no space on this roster for player who wants to demand things. now it may be ture that he need a new contract but what he dont understand or is not understanding is that the jets knows that, every player on that team knows that, and everybody that follow football knows that but that is just not the way to go about it. look at the brick and mangold. they wanted new contracts and came to pratice and camp and shut their mouths, and got it. those are the kinda players we need. ok maybe we wont be the number one defense, maybe we will barely make it into the playoffs. i rather have that than losing in the afc camp with a whole bunch of egotistic players

I think Revis is a selfish man and i hope Wilson plays good enough so Revis can just sit the season and then we trade him to another team for two first rounders next year.

Selfish Revis will never recoup the 12 Mil he will give up this year plus all the endorsements he probably would of got being in New York and being the best player in the city,he should hire Ryan as his agent because he is the one that got him all the publicity!

  58. By uncle joe on Aug 30, 2010 | Reply

I believe the Revis hold out,Holmes suspension and all the injuries will be a sought of a blessing in disquise because it brought the team back down to earth and back to a mind set of No One Thinks We Can Do It,Same Old Jets have a history of doing something ONLY when we are not suposed to.As far as I’m concerned the two most important Jets are signed, Rex Ryan and Mr. T !

Best posts of the day, Ablity and Ganggreen. Nice stuff from you, too, uncle joe, but you don’t really hit your stride until you start listing the menus for Sunday.
