Derrick Mason Tweets: ‘Time to Fly!!!’

Posted by Eric Allen on August 6, 2011 – 5:12 pm

Well, we knew it wouldn’t take long for Derrick Mason to make a decision on his future and apparently it hasn’t. Numerous media outlets are reporting Mason has agreed to terms with the Jets, but Mason basically made it official himself on Twitter.

Jets Nation might want to start following @deemason85 because the veteran wideout delivered the following tweets this afternoon:

Jet fuel is full time to fly!!!

and then:

Going from one young gun to another! Hahahahahaha.

There is no official word yet out of One Jets Drive, but if he has agreed to join the Green & White, we expect to be talking to him Sunday at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. This would be a big pickup for a team in transition at wideout as a top three of Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery in 2010 would move to a Holmes-Plaxico Burress-Mason trifecta in 2011.

Mason is a leader and brings a lot of character to the table. But the 37-year-old, who has 924 career receptions, 11,981 yards and 66 TDs on his résumé, still has plenty of game left as well. Mason caught 61 balls last season from Joe Flacco and seven of those went for touchdowns. The former Raven, a Detroit native, played with Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard in Baltimore and the Jets have a number of players with Michigan ties.

Mason’s tweets appear to mean the Jets, who hosted him this week, beat out the Ravens and the Titans for his services. The Green & White had an off day today, but they may have just gotten better and Mark Sanchez may be smiling.

Great! Nowwith Mason, the Jets have their own version of Wes Welker. The Jets have never had that instant first down machine. Now let’s see; 6’5 Plaxico Burress, 6’4 Dustin Keller, 6’5 Patrick Turner, clutchman Derrick Mason and Home Run Santonio Holmes. Now Sanchez will be the next Dan Marino. Move the chains brother, move the chains.

    Any luck with Shaun Ellis?!

  3. By steven on Aug 6, 2011 | Reply

If we can get Shaun Ellis back, I think we’ll have a defence that won’t wear down this season. He does his job and doesn’t get lazy. Put him opposite Calvin Pace where he can rush the passer. He’ll be valuable insurance if anybody gets hurt or Kenrick Ellis has legal problems during the year. I don’t think we have anything to lose by gettin Shaun Ellis back.

ravens aren’t an offensive juggernaut and they seemed to be at ease not having mason this year even after losing heap.you wonder what he really has left.I believe the jets will rue losing cotchery.in this day and age just shutting your mouth and doing your job isn’t enough.

Very glad this is resolved. I was concerned when he left without signing a contract which is usually not a good sign.
EA is right he brings great veteran leadership to the Jets. And also his #’s last year even though they were down were still better than Edwards’ and J-Co’s. But will give J-Co some slack because he played hurt. Heard he is getting offers from Pitt and Balt. Maybe Wilson or Strickland will be covering J-Co 10/2 in Balt.
I think the Jets will carry 6 WR’s this year. They p/u the extra spot because they won’t carry 2 FB’s like they did last year. Early camp prediction the WR’s group Holmes,Mason,Plax,Kerley,Turner and Payne. This could turn into a better unit than they had last year. Add in Keller and away we go.
    GO JETS!!!

Here we go! This is great news, we needed someone to replace B Edwards and his name D Mason, I love it. He was real good last year and I think he will be as good or better this year. Now we have 3 WRs with alot of experience and of course or new ones also.

This is Great for The JETS IMO, with the unfortunate business move of J-CO…this adds a slot body to go with Homes and Burress,,,,Now go get that Pass russer …..OSI OSI OSI

    Peace Jets Fans

The jets have a great mix of young player and smart vets. I’m starting to get super excited over this season. Mason is a beast and he still can make CB respect him even at age 37. Mason career # must be respected also. LETS GO JETS!

I prefer last years lineup of SH,BE, and J-Co to this years with SH Plax and Mason. But what you see is what you get I would say, so lets hope for the best. I think with a 37 year old WR and another who hasn’t been on the field for the past two years maybe we should pray instead of hope for the best. 64, lets see what this guy Kerley can do in a few of these pre season games before we anoint him the # 3 or #4 WR spot. I would be happy if he shows something in kick and punt returns.

No accident that post-Rex, we now have a speed demon #1 WR and 2 big, bruising #2′s. (Mason clearly has a chance to beat out Plax for #2 if Plax is slow to get up to speed.) When you think we started under Rex with the slower J-Co as #1, the slightly faster but smaller Stuckey at #2 and not much else (my hopes for Clowney notwithstanding, GaryC), this is a much more skilled, muscular O. I also wanna know what D’s will do when we line up SH, Plax, Mason, and Kerley in a formation, how are they gonna cover THAT?! And I really like that Kerley now gets to focus on KR and PR this yr while learning the slot in back of 3 tremendous WR vets. As for J-Co, good luck to him but like Rex says, we’re actually trying to win the SB, not just jawin’.

    > Randy, Now You got me started. I hope big time that Shotty son of MARRRTY,will remember this year in the AFC champion ship game, that when you have one of the best offence lines in the game. And John Conner. That ground and pound is what will work. And not Santonio on the slant @ THE 1-YARDLINE!!!!!. I thought my head was going to explode. I KNOW REX LOVES THIS GUY AND HE IS GOOD FOR MARK. BUT WE NEED TO BREAK THAT CURSE. LOVE ALWAYS. TIM IN SO.CAL!!!!!

come on guys…he’s 165 years old !!…why is gaining a 37 yr young reciever considered an upgrade over a 29 yr old?

So now we have Holmes, plus a 34 yr old, and a 37 yr dude. Over last year, when we had holmes, a 27 yr and a 28 yr guy. How did we do this? These old bodies are vulnerable to disease and fragility.

Mason went in the 4th rnd. in 1997.
Notable players drafted ahead of him:
Ike Hilliard, Rae Carruth, Kevin Locket and Dedric Ward.
A solid pro, he returned KO’s & Punts up to 2004.
A good pick up but at 37, it looks like he is “one and done.”
Got to replace Bryan Thomas. He cannot play two good games in a row.
Last year’s draft was awful. Mike T. has got to come through with this bunch.
A belated birthday wish to Bake Turner who turned 71 on July 22. He graduated Texas Tech. Hopefully Jeremy Kerley from the same school will play up to all the hype.
Good night Stan Blinka wherever you are!

No Doubt Derrick Mason has something left in his tank, However TJ Housmanzedah has a whole lot more!!!!! Why wasn’t he our pick?

Now Baltimore is looking for a WR, and J-Co is now available. Would be a good fit for J-Co…next to Bouldin.

  24. By Jet Fan Since '64 Tom on Aug 7, 2011 | Reply

2 more things on J-Co for any “fan favorites” sentimentalists: (1) Revis said “You should try to reward these guys,” meaning class acts like J-Co, “or keep them on the team as long as you can.” We tried to keep him on the team, just not as a starter and he wants to start. (2) I cry no tears for ANY of these guys in terms of $. I’m more worried about construction guys and gals who haven’t worked in yrs, bartenders, waiters, waitresses, and busboys losing their tips and customers, laid-off teachers and nurses, small business owners strangled by taxes and regulations, award-winning editors and journalists who can’t get a job at any paper anywhere, NFL fans who can’t afford tickets to a game…these are descriptions of just some of my friends.

On a positive note about getting mason is that it gives the Jets the time now not to rush back Plax. Being away from the game for 2 years its going to take about 4-6 weeks of real games before he really gets his legsand body back into game shape. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of Mason early on than Plax except for when they go to 3 or more wides and then Mason can move into the slot.
I think realistic #’s for mason would be something like 45-50 catches and 5 TD’s.
    GO JETS!!!!

  26. By GaryC on Aug 7, 2011 | Reply

jet fan tom,if you think Mason is a starter on the jets then they have gotten worse at wideout,It is ludicrous to think the jets are better with mason and burress over cotchery, edwards, and yes I’ll say it Brad Smith.one guy who hasn’t played in over two years and another whose own team says we can live without him.One more thing on the love of rex theory, how many free agents were out there this year and how many signed with the jets, and I am not counting the resigns, what is the percentage.

  27. By Jet Fan Since '64 Tom on Aug 7, 2011 | Reply

‘Cause the 29 yr-old didn’t want to be a #3 for us and failed his physical, Pranit. GaryC, J-Co had only 3 yrs with a higher av p/catch than Mason had just last yr and never avg’d more than a yd and change over DM’s 13.1 of last yr, never had DM’s 7 TDs of last yr. I’d rather have SH, BE, and a healthy J-Co but BE played it dumb and J-Co wants to start. The only real starter now is SH, DM and Plax will fight it out and if Kerley gets a hot hand he’ll play too since both DM and Plax might be 1 and done. Not the way I’d do it but Rex and Mr T’s SB-or-bust-every-yr approach seems to require it. As for Smith, he can’t be even mentioned with any of the 5 vet WRs listed above. Kerley will quickly make everyone forget him at WR, maybe at KR too.

we got three consistant recievers now. yes two have to learn the offence but they are professionals. they will be there to help the youngins leran the offence and train their minds to do so in such fashion. we are ready for all on coming traffic with our go getters. take off the restraints and let sanchez fly and they will be there. Also forget Osi i really think he does not fit the 3-4 defence. i would love ellis to come back and help our guys on DL learn the game. Im wearing my flight gear on lets fly

Yeah, MarkP, Happy Birthday to Bake, who stuck around long enough for the SB yr when Sauer pushed him to #3. Mark Blanchard, Housh dropped the biggest pass of his career last yr on BAL in the playoffs and I’m sure Rex noticed. As for Love of Rex Theory, GaryC, I wouldn’t say it’s a lock but there’s some evidence of it. For Holmes to take less $ to stay after we all thought he was gonna be a mercenary says a lot. LORT is also probably at work with the guys who signed reworked contracts (including LT, who’s no scrub), Pool, Mason. Not Rex’s fault if Aso is a bad judge of QBs and thinks Vick’s gonna win a SB before Sanchez! Seeing how many guys some teams lost and how few some teams got, Rex isn’t doing too badly. I agree on Mason, Ira.

As a bmore native/fan, its hard to see mase go but he is 37 and fyi jets fans he runs 2 routes. An out to the sideline and a short cutback that’s it. I love made but he no longer has speed and can’t beat the coverage. Good luck made wish you the best!

  31. By dan on Aug 7, 2011 | Reply

Rex said he likes to keep the team intact for the most part. The Jets didn’t feel the need to go out and go crazy signing F/A. Believe me if the Jets were intersted in someone they will make the attempt to sign them and for the most part those F/A want to play for the Jets. Sorry to say it but Rex has turned this teams view on themselves around for the better and the players, owner, and fans finally have an optimistic view every season so while yes I as a fan dislike and even disagree when players like J-Co and Brad Smith are gone I have the confidence in this team from owner coach and players are doing the best thing for the team and the fans. They have some good young players for the future

i heard rumours Ellis is a Patriot

  33. By Ray on Aug 7, 2011 | Reply

GaryC, love Rex or not this is still a money driven era, players today are about who is gonna pay. The Jets were hampered by their cap space, and also by wasting time trying to sign Namdi. Just because they didn’t sign guys doesn’t mean they turned the Jets down, how many did the Jets actually go after? Who are you thinking we didn’t sign? Namdi, we didn’t have the cap space for him, he played us for a better offer from Dallas or Philly. Loving Rex or wanting to play for him doesn’t automatically mean a discount at the cashier…

  34. By Ray on Aug 7, 2011 | Reply

My point is, it doesn’t matter how many FAs are available. It is how many they went after… If all we went after was Plax, Namdi and Mason….then we got two out of three. That’s a pretty good percentage. If they went after a hundred and we got two… not so good. Only they know how many they actually targeted.

  35. By Christopher on Aug 7, 2011 | Reply

How has Partick Turner looked so far? I would expect he is the red zone big guy that steps in for Plax if he can’t go, or needs a break (can’t imagine Plax is going to step in and play every down, someone needs to step in). This looks like a good opprotunity for him. Mason will work in a pinch, but he is more of a #3/#4 3rd down WR.

It’s a real shame we lost S. Ellis, to join the Pats no less, It’s not a huge loss, he is at the end of his carrer, but the leadership, the knowledge of the system, and the extra depth he would have brought to the line cannot be replaced. Injuries are going to be the key this year. S Ellis should have finished his carrer with the Jets and shame on Woody, Mike T, and Rex for not making that happen.
