Jets Kick Off OTA Phase of Their Offseason

Posted by Randy Lange on May 21, 2012 – 2:54 pm

The Jets have entered Phase III.

The Jets began their Organized Team Activities (a.k.a. OTAs) today at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. This is the start of Phase III on the Jets’ offseason calendar for bringing players together and building toward the veteran minicamp June 12-14 and the return to Cortland, N.Y., for training camp. Other teams have started their OTAs either last week, this week or next week. The Jets’ OTAs will run for three days a week over the next three weeks before minicamp week.

And because the weather was quite wet at the start of the day here in northern New Jersey, this first voluntary practice took place in the team’s fieldhouse.

There is no media availability until Thursday this week. But it sounds as if WR Santonio Holmes was in the building and enjoying himself. As he tweeted on his certified Twitter account:

Great 1st day on the field as a whole unit. Looking forward to big things this year GO JETS!

Independent of the practice, we have some news from the numerology department: With the addition of Yeremiah Bell to the roster comes a small game of uniform dominoes.

Bell, who wore No. 37 for his entire eight seasons with the Aqua & Coral (Dolphins), will wear 37 again this season for the Green & White.

S Tracy Wilson, who wore No. 37 for the Jets last season, has downshifted to No. 36. And undrafted free agent CB Donnie Fletcher, who wore 36 at the rookie minicamp two-plus weeks ago, has moved on to No. 34.

Kendrick Ellis will do 45 days in jail which he can serve between these practices and training camp. Not a very cool summer vacation but it beats being deported!

It seems like Holmes is a changed man, and the whole offense is singing the praise of the new coaching staff. Seems like Shotty was not liked at all. Didn’t he go to the Rams? so he’s their O coordinator and their Defensive Coordinator was just thrown out of the league,,,and you people complain about this team!!!!

  3. By Jake98660 on May 21, 2012 | Reply

So I guess by giving Tracy Wilson #36, Jim Leonhard wont be back. I’m alittile sad by that. I though Jim was much better then given credit for, andmuch better then Eric Smith. Smith, who missed the game saving tackle on Tim Tebow on thursday night football, and he was the guy who missed the tackle on Giants wide reciever Victor Cruz on that 99 yard td catch and run in week 16. Smith cant cover TE’s and has proven he can’t be a leader in the D back field, losing time to Brodney Pool the last couple seasons proves that. The Jets should drop smith and bring back Jimmy. I don’t have faith in Bell or that Landry can stay healthy. Oh… and sign Revis before he holds out again. One more thing… Sanchez is better than Tebow. Stats prove it.

uncle joe, I’ll still cut Schotty the possible slack that Sanchez couldn’t execute what Schotty wanted him to and that Rex’s 1940s ideas about O made it harder for Schotty to put pts on the board. That said, Schotty shoulda been let go for his goal-line play-calling alone, as I started to say in November of 2009 when he called that ridiculous goal-line screen to Wallace Wright, of all people, on, if I remember correctly, 3rd down. Maybe it was 4th but either way, that bungled series was almost exactly like the bungled one vs PIT in the championship game over a yr later and Rex still hadn’t worked up the guts or smarts to get rid of the guy. I have a feeling Sparano woulda fired Schotty a lot earlier.

yea he def wasnt well liked out here on the streets either. namely the”fire brian schottenheimer” facebook page that was up since 2007 i think. i was def a fan of that page~! we’ll see how holmes is once the season starts. once he doesnt get a ball thrown his way his tune can change real easily. plus couple that with sparanos new offense focusing on the run and we have DRAMA!!!!

FINALLY FOOTBALL RUMBLINGS :). I am starting to feel better. Let’s hope that last season was just the terrible nightmare it was. Fresh coffee and move on. I am excited that the Jets management decided to FINALLY get some speed on offense & defense. Heck we need it. Also a big welcome to OC Tony S. and the O & D line coaches. Finally a D lineman to coach the D line. As for the news on Ellis – it could have been worse – both for him & the Jets. Let’s hope he does not miss too much instruction during this off-season. Let’s hope all the players stay healthy and we have a good year — Go JETS.

Kenrick Ellis will do no jail time if the justice system works they will see that justice has already been served. Bad guy gets a smack in the chops kenrick moves on to the NFL. justice served . I think that uncle joe should get 45 days ban from this site for his rediculous posts

  13. By IRA on May 22, 2012 | Reply

Nice to hear some positive remarks from Holmes. I think he will have a bounce back year. As for Ellis well he is lucky it was reduced to 45 days only. The Jets knew what they were dealing with when they drafted him so this should come as no surprise. Very convenient that he makes minicamp and starts to serve his stay 6/15 and gets out in time to make camp except for a few days.
Very happy they signed Bell great insurance for Landry.
    uncle joe,
Hey i am high on Saprano too but players always will sing praises to the new coach in town especially after the old one is gone. While all were to blame the players can put all of it on the past coach instead. Not all the plays called are the right ones by any coach but the players have to execute

  14. By Frank on May 22, 2012 | Reply

Only Spicer would say Bell and Landry are a better tandem than Smith and Leonhard. We have two slow footed and 1 damaged strong safeties…who is going to cover the TE’s? Belichick must be laughing him self silly. I wanted to sign Bell not Landry. I said it months ago Landry is damaged goods his achilles is not healed and he was told 2 years in a row to get surgery for the bone spurs which is creating this chronic problem. Unless one of these rookies step up big time Safety is going to be the teams “achilles heal” this season.

  15. By IRA on May 22, 2012 | Reply

Frank, No way are they going to go with Bell and Landry back their as starters. Teams will have a field day throwing down the seams over 15 yds. This would be a nightmare and i would be shocked if they open the season back there together. Their FS is not on the rostor yet unles Bush, Wilson or Allen surprise. I knew they would regret the day they got rid of Rhodes. They haven’t been able to cover deep since he has left. The problem with his attitude needed to be handled so they could keep him. Abraham and Rhodes still have not been replaced.

  16. By Allan O'Dane on May 22, 2012 | Reply

These two safeties are built for stopping the run ( Bell/Landry). I thought the NYJ were going draft Barron..which many people think he could be the next Ed Reed. I would have liked to see Barron with Revis and Cro….and I know Landry has some issues but man this guy is like an extra LB will be good on run support. We will have to see how that heel holds up.
This Kendrik Ellis situation has struck a nerve with me…This Kid who was protecting his girlfriend and the guy coming at him had a bat. What was he supposed to do? For him to get any jail time just baffles me.
Frank…Belichick has been laughing at us for a very lonngggg time. Now that NE has stacked up their offense teams will be in the dime package all day long.

Nice piece on NFL network the other night. “This has become a passing League”…64tom where have we heard this before? I thought players were supposed to have the QB’s back. The only person I saw stand up for GQ was Mangold. I listen to some of the comments players are making about Tebow and you know what I hear? Mark Sanchez is not a leader…Sanchez makes to many bonehead errors…Sanchez is not strong willed…Sanchez doesn’t throw hard…I am just reading inbetween in the line here guys….Sanchez will not be a NYJ next year. Put a stamp on that one.

Yeah, Frank however you look at it the S problem is a lot better then it was last year is it champion caliber absolutely not but its better.

It had to work out for Ellis one way or the other he does his 45 and we finally can move on and maybe we will see more of a hybrid System as to just a 3 man Front. Willkerson, Pouha, Ellis, Couples, just saying not bad of a line.

Here is my take on Schotty, he schould have left after they turned him down for the HC job and just let Rex get his own OC, is he a bad OC i dont think so otherwise he wouldnt gotten another Job, especially with a prestigous Coach like JF. Does he deserves some of the blame for what went on here last year absolutly he does, i think a change of scenery was good for everybody involved.
Here is another thing thru all this you got to handed to Schotty he hasnt said one bad thing about the jets, sanchez or anybody he worked for or with, packed his Bags and took the highroad. Any other coach in his situation would have loved to rip this ORG. another one.

  20. By uncle joe on May 22, 2012 | Reply

Ira, you’re right about players passing the blame to coaches that are gone but coming from a guy like Keller I think there is a lot of truth. It seems like Shotty had no discipline and it was probably not by choice, no one really seemed to respect him. He definately needed a change of scenery but should’ve went down to the college level for a while to regroup before taking another NFL gig.

  21. By uncle joe on May 22, 2012 | Reply

I also think one of the more underated offseason moves the Jets made was getting D-Line coach Dunbar. I read and hear nothing but great things about him and if we can get better production up front, with our Corners, things could get interesting! Just worried about this whole Safety position thing.

Jim Leonard is one of my favorite Jets too but, its hard to see Jim matching one on one with Gronk and Hernandez. With the 2 S drafted and 2 FA’s I can’t see them resigning Jim. Our FS is yet to be determined. The Jets would have to change up there D quite a bit to have Jim on the field. Jets haven’t really played the style of D that allows a FS to roam around and make plays because of there pass rush problems.

Frank no way is starting LaRon and Bell worse then having Leanard and Smith back there. Not saying I want them two on the field together but as I do love lil Leanard he is to small and that killed us but Smith is the slowest safety in the NFL, CFL, Arena League and any other league out there including LIFFL flag league. No safety can do worse then Smith did last season. Now he is a tough player and could be a GREAT Special Teams player so he is valuable but not at safety. Some are wrong with LaRon if he stays healthy the guy runs a 4.5 40yd dash and if u watch his highlights he can go sideline to sideline, Yes he hits a ton and great against the run but he can cover TE’s with his speed and toughness. Antonio Allen is gonna suprise too

Guys who dont know the game as well as the “delusional Tebow fans” will be screaming for him even if Mark has a career year. The problem is if you watched Tim MR. 46% Tebow you know he is not a NFL QB. The freaks will say he throws a good deep ball but I say yea but he cant complete a 5 yard pass.

Ira, you’re showing a very weird selective memory about Rhodes, who didn’t like to hit and was as slow as any S we have on the roster today. Allan, I’m not a fan of Tebow based on what he’s done in the NFL so far but I’m also not a far of this alleged superstar named Mark Sanchez who doesn’t really exist on the field. In that sense, 40 year fan, Sanchez may have more in common with Obama than Obama does with Schotty, though I have very little good to say about any politicians of any party. They’re almost never statesmen or stateswomen and are usually a nuisance at best, a menace at worst. Kinda like GMs who never played football or HCs who don’t bother to learn their own offense…

Safety has become a problem all over the NFL. The Giants did not have great safeties but won the Super Bowl. If the Jets DL can finally get some pressure the safeties job will be a lot easier. I agree it is a passing league BUT you need a PASSING QB. Whatever happened to the other running back we drafted last year? I think NY fans are smart enough to know Tebow’s limitations. I hope McElroy gets a chance but I doubt it. They will trade him and he will become a star somewhere else.

  43. By mike van on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Mark Sanchez will be great this year and if the defense can return to 2010 form, which I am sure they will, we have a championship caliber team. The sprinkle in a little Tebow and a great running game with Shonn and voila, the opposing team won’t know what hit ‘em. Go Jets!

  44. By Chicago Bob on May 23, 2012 | Reply

If Leonhard is healthy, he will be brought back – just hoping N.E. doesn’t beat us to the punch. There were a lot of holes to fill and I think for the most part they did a good job. If Coples is anything close to what we are hoping and Wilkerson continues to improve, that pass rush alone will help the safety situation however our lack of speed back there will hurt. We can only fix one thing at a time. Tebow still has a lot to improve on – I was never a Cavanaugh fan however hopefully Sanchez will have a decent enough year where Cavanaugh can continue to work on Tebow’s mechanics. Good news on Ellis – only if he is able to reach his potential. I said it for 3 years, Schotty had to go – the discipline alone Sparano brings will improve things.

The biggest culprit of last seasons was bringing in Burress to play opposite Holmes. Two strong egoed, outspoken WRs that were both allowed to from the Steelers for conduct detrimental to the team. Burress was the biggest cancer which is the reason for him not being signed to this point.

  46. By FL.PETE on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Shotty had a great scheme, just probably needs to simplify the verbage and checks. His system always struggle against physical defenses going back to the Pennington days (Remember Favre’s Frustration). The 2012 Jets will be much better after those two subtractions of Burress and Shotty.

  47. By uncle joe on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Cannot fault the Jets for not getting a FS this offseason, all the good ones were franchised and the draft was weak at that position. Maybe Cro goes to Safety in certain packages like against NE’s Gronk, just worry about having a bad tackler as our last line of Defense.

  48. By IRA on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Rhodes wasn’t like that until after he signed his new contract. 06-07 11 takeaways and 7 sacks please we haven’t had a safety put up those type of #’s since who knows when.

  49. By dave on May 23, 2012 | Reply

having bell and landry in together on the goaline defense will be nice, but other than that they can’t be on the field together unless the other team is in our redzone.

I just dont understand how this team expects to win without a viable RT. Hunter is not a starter on a superbowl winning team. Let him go back to being “the best back-up tackle in football” as Rex used to call him.

  50. By Allan O'Dane on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Cro would have made a great safety…IF he was willing to hit. He has the height..speed…range…weight…BUT the boy don’t like to stick his nose in there. Landry does have speed and will be able to handle most TE’s. So lets just hope the secondary of Revis-Cro / Landry-Bell become one the most feared secondaries. As far as our front seven. Coples-Pouha-Wilkerson is a wait and see thing. Thomas-Harris-Scott-Pace…there’s the issue. Pace is overrated…Thomas is coming off injury and a year older..Scott? well…his bark is worse then his bite…Harris is pure run stuffing ILB and still the best. We need speed here. We can’t rely on Maybin all the time for sacks. Pressure from front seven will make life easier for the secondary.

  51. By Allan O'Dane on May 23, 2012 | Reply

And if we don’t sign Leonard..he’s going to NE…the ink won’t even be dry when he gets off the plane. I like Jim L. but he wasn’y big enough of fast enough to handle the modern day TE. He will make a great secondary coach someday. Still have some concern about our RT issue. I know wayne wants to prove something…but last year was brutal. If Dunbar can coach up coples after working with Jared Allen…maybe..just maybe we finally have our verison of a John Abraham…

  52. By Jet Fan Since '64 Tom on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Chicago Bob, “If Leonhard is healthy” should probably be put up over his locker after the guy goes down 2 yrs in a row in December. There is no worse choice than a 5′ 8″ S at this time given the way the league has been going for yrs. Last yr I asked who was covering Celek before the PHI game and the answer was no one so he went, what, 6 for 150? Sentimentality over guys like Leonhard is one big reason that the Jets remain losers.

  53. By Karan on May 23, 2012 | Reply

I always thought Schotty had a horrible sheme. Once in the blue moon, the guy would call a great game, but on a usual basis, the playcalling was sooo perdictable. 1st & 10: run for 3 yards, 2nd & 7: pass to keller for 4 yards, 3rd & 3: run for a yard, 4th & 2: punt, and it was the same old thing over and over again. So glad he’s gone, hope Sparano is a man who likes to take shots deep down the field.

I really hope Mark Sanchez proves people wrong this year. There is a ton of pressure on him but he needs to answer the call. Its a do or die year for him, thats for sure. He doesn’t seem intrigued by the Tebow signing but as wayne said, Sanchez needs to take a positive approach on that and step it up.

If Jim Leonhard returns, we will be absolutely loaded at safety. However, i read somewhere that Bell isn’t here to be a back-up, that could mean bye-bye to Mr. Leonhard. I personally would be ecstatic If he returns, very smart player and definetly one of my favorite Jets during his tenure here. Lets continue that.

  57. By wayne on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Ira, I agree, as deficient as some thought Leonhard was, you cannot underestimate the ability to run and catch a ball in the defensive secondary. The guys back there outside of the starting CBs have questionable hands and limited concept in playing against the pass….Brady will have them for lunch and show the rest of the league just how to exploit them….Chicago Bob, good point about Leonhard to NE. I can see that happening…..Before anybody go anointing Sparano as the next HC, remember how awful his O was down in MIA…He didn’t do much to help a young QB there…As for Rhodes, Ira, all I can remember of him his last couple a years was him making tackles AFTER big gains. He shudda been better than he was. Went hollywood.

  58. By Frank on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Ira spot on about Leonhard….he was the QB on defense calling the alignments and making sure everyone was in position and he was a stud at the line of scrimmage. I said it before when he is healthy they will sign him. 64 come on man Rhodes slow footed???? Dead wrong dude he was very fast and a playmaker and still is. I agree when Rex showed up his tackling skills declined rapidly. Danny you and Spicer are in dream world. Spicer still railing on Tebow….like I said let the best man win.

My only problem with bringing back Leonhard will be since they signed Bell and Landry they will probably cut one of the draft picks. The Jets rarely give young players a chance to mature and show their stuff. On the other hand show Rex an old slow past his prime star andd he gets excited.

Stop in after 10 weeks to take a gander at the comments and it’s the same old stuff. Spicer continues his inexplicable love affair with a QB that is mediorce at best but now instead of useless stats he has to attack Tebow on a none stop basis. Like this will prove how great Sanchize is. Landry is doubtfull for OPENING DAY, he has a chronic achiles tendon injury that the Skins wanted operated on instead he went with an “alternative treatment”. GOOD LUCK with that. Leonard was a veteran leader and will be missed for the intangibles he brought. ie leadership, toughness etc… Hey Spicer did you ever fiquer out that some things can not be measured by stats alone… guess not… somethings will never change

Rich Kotite 1 – 15 then Pacells comes in and brings the Jets right to the playoffs but coaches mean nothing its just the players hahaha WOW . Brad Childress destroyed MINN Bretts greates statistical season as did Mike Tice when they had a young Randy Moss and Culpepper lighting the field up. Belicheck was a rookie coach in Cleveland and as in players it’s the same for coaches they make rookie mistakes. Yes a Coach needs talent but talent also needs a great coach. Tony Dungy went to Tampa and turned that Team around then Chucky won a SB with them. They been rebuilding ever since. Ohh yes Alabama’s coach is Nick Saban who is one of theee best College Coaches of all time, Some PPL just don’t have a clue and think they really do haha

Kerry Rhodes was on the fast track to being a pro-bowler, and probably would have been but got snubbed in favor of John Lynch after mangini’s first year. Something changed though after Rex came. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Defense is miles better with Rex calling the shots but something did change with Rhodes, which was to bad because I bought his jersy, and then right after that he left and signed with Arizona. went back and looked at madden 08 and Rhodes had a player level of like 93 and had the “ball hawk” tag on his avitar, just goes to show what he was thought of back then. It’s just strange what happend to him.

  69. By danny on May 23, 2012 | Reply

The Redskins tried to buy Championships plenty of times and how did that work out ?? Mangini can evaluate talent well and would make a great GM but he can;t coach that talent as he proved when Rex came in with his talent and took us to 2 AFC Championship games. Coaches mean nothing tho in the NFL. NE changes OC’s but they have the best coach in the NFL and maybe in history. Every coaching job is different and a lot of times when winning coaches move on to another team it’s because there last coach got fired and the team is rotten. Sometimes you can improve the team but if u never get the talent no u can’t win but some coaches like a Mike Tice had the talent but CAN’T win

Leonard with his leadersip & toughness lol. After 3 years I am tired of watching him get trucked in the running game & beat in the passing game. 2 years in a row he had a season ending injury he cant stay healthy & he is 5’8 185 he does have the size to stand up to these guys .We need to get better in the spot

  71. By Tom Spicer on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Laron Landry has been in the game 5 years in the 1st 3 years he made the pro bowl. The last 2 years he has season ending injurys Leonard also has had season ending injurys the last 2 years. So I can understand this how is Landry damaged goods but Leonard is not? also where are the 3 pro bowls for Leonard thats right he never even came close to making 1. Come on now where do some of you guys come up with this stuff?

  72. By Tom Spicer on May 23, 2012 | Reply

Bennett, It doesnt take stats to see that a Landry is significantly better than Leonhard & it doesnt take stats to see that Mark is a significantly better QB than Tebow. But you cant see it so I guess somethings do never change.

In regards to player development, drafting, trades or FA signings the FO has in my opinion totaly underachived.
On the Coaches subject however joe, think about this, Pete Carroll curently doing so with Seattle, Rich Kotite, and whole bunch off others would find a way to srew up even Tom Brady. Allthough i agree in principle with about the idea that great players make great Coaches, there is also the the other Side where bad Coaches just are what they are BAD.

That’s right, Ira, Rhodes got worse every yr he was on the team, which is why Rex gave him one more chance and then sent him on his way. As for S sacks, the way Rex designs D even a shrimp like Drew Coleman can get 4 or 5 of ‘em a yr, so I’m not impressed. When Jets DL guys and LBs start getting sacks in good numbers, gimme a call. Frank, you must not watch all the games or watch very closely. On that pick in Rhodes’ last yr with us — the one on which he said he was “embarrassed to be caught from behind by a WHITE guy!” — he looked like he’d pulled a muscle. And he doesn’t look too swift on AZ these days — and as wayne says, he makes A LOT of his tackles after huge gains, as many guys on bad D’s do.

On a more serious subject very sad to hear about the passing of Steve Mendelsohn. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times and he was a great guy and very interesting person to talk to. Please everybody take the time to read Randy’s story about him. May he rest in peace.

Conner had no competition at all besides maybe Baker lined up at times. I am not sold on Conner after watching him last year. Hard to fill T-Rich’s shoes and Sparano likes to use a FB. Conner has to step up his game this summer. If Hunter plays up to his ability he will be ok. Still think they have a short list of veterans and will be watching the waiver wires in case a veteran is needed.

The point is not that Landry is a better S than Leonard the point is Landry is chronically injured and may not even be able to play a full season hence the “prove it” 1 year deal. The point is not that Sanchez is a better QB than Tebow the point is any way you look at it Sanchize is just not a good QB and has not lived up to the expectations of the 5th pick. His preformance in the last 3 games highlighted his problems. He should never have had an extension and should have had to compete for the stating postion. Putting down Tebow will not change this. If he slips the media will begin unrelenting pressure to start Tebow. I think we all realize this

  83. By Allan O'Dane on May 24, 2012 | Reply

GaryC, you hit it right on the head. All this with extra FB and a Rugby player is to help Wayne hunters side of the line. Putting a bandaid on this instead of addressing this issue via free-agency or the draft. That’s Mike T for you..Big Mistake letting Rob Turner go. Could have just inserted him in RT and keep slauson at G. Turner was the ace guy who could cover all positions on the O-line.
Jake98660, what happened to Kerry Rhodes? He went Hollywood that’s what happened…he was more interested in posing for magazines and doing shows then playing football. And this kid had all the tools to be great…wasted talent.

Sparano will have an impact on the offense – the accountability alone will make this offense better and he will play to their strengths. He is head and shoulders above Schotty – Sparano will not have Sanchez throwing the ball 40-50 times a game nor will he sit back and play conservative and hope the defense holds out and wins the game. Schotty is now Jeff Fisher’s problem. Sparano did not have much to work with however you will notice the Dolphins never quit on him, they played hard throughout the season. Don’t forget, Sparano was Parcell’s hand picked successor – unless all of us have short memories, Parcells is no dope. Sparano may not be a good head coach however from what his record indicates, he is a very good assistant.

We were waiting for the players and the owners to come to an agreement. Sanchez will be fine. He did take us to Two straight AFC championship games. No other team can say their team went to two straight conference games, unlees you look at the Faketiots all those years ago. Wayne Hunter will be fine. He did ok in the playoffs two seasons ago, filling in for Damien Woody. The Jets were built to outlast teams in the 4th qtr. I see a 12-4 season coming

Not sure why there are so many posts on here worrying about slow safeties’ inability to cover the deep ball. Our problem has been over the middle (see gronk, celek and welker). Sure we need speed, everywhere, but knocking receivers off their routes works well. Pitt beat NE doing it. Lets see our front 7 make life easier for the back end. Agree w someone on here; don’t get sentimental about Leonhard, too small, too slow, big brain=coach. People do the same w Pennington b/c he’s such a great guy.
BTW, I know we don’t point out typos, grammar etc, but as an HR Mgr I have to say this: players are PERSONNEL, comments on here about other posters are PERSONAL.

From Yahoo “Mark Sanchez was sharp in the New York Jets’ first session of organized team activities open to the media, while backup Tim Tebow threw two interceptions in a three-play span. While it’s only May, and the Jets have made it clear that Sanchez is the starting quarterback, it was an encouraging performance. The play of the day was Sanchez’s 80-yard toss to speedy second-round draft pick Stephen Hill. Tebow, acquired in March to be Sanchez’s backup, was picked off by Bart Scott and then newly signed Yeremiah Bell two plays later. ” I love the 80 yard bomb to Stephen Hill part I hope to see alot of that this year. I think this kid Hill is going to be a keeper.

Sparano had O talent to work with and as someone said his team never quit. A lot of coaches in the past have been great assistants and poor Head Coaches. Mangini put together a damnnn good team. Horrible teams don’t beat Indy and NE on there turf in playoffs and play in 2 AFC Championships in a row. Brickshaw, Revis, Mangold and David Harris are Pro Bowl players and Dustin Keller was def a good draft choice and productive player for us. As for Sparano as somone also said earlier Bill Parcells knows football better then most and better then anyone on this site and he loves Sparano as a Coach so that in itself is enough to feel good about the guy. Not having Shotty is also enough to feel good about Sparano

Even on the NFL level a great coach can get the best out of a player and get the player to play to his full potential. Rex proved that last season with Maybin. He was a bust in Buffalo but yet played great for Rex and led the team in sacks. Watch how much our D line will improve under Coach Dunbar who is known thru out the league as one the best D line coaches in all of football. Coaching can help a good player become great and a average player become good even on the NFL level. There have been plenty of players with all the talent in the world but don’t pan out and there are some with less talent that have pro bowl yrs. Coaching is huge in the NFL and to say only elite QB’s win SB well how many Rich Kotite’s win them ?

U are not even close to what my pt is Joe because all u know how to do is throw names at. It’s useless talking to you as all u say is ur friend did this and ur friend did that. Joe how many LT’s are there that ever played ? Were talking most NFL players not LT. As u said yes in college if u have the size they will take u and try to turn u into a player but that don;t happen in the NFL. Vinny Stewart a Longwood player was a monster but not great and got full ride to Penn State due to his size. Omare Palmer is a monster and skilled from Longwood and has a full ride to Cuse

This has to be the most BORING string of comments ever. All NFL players are special some more than others. What good coaches do is tailor the plans to the talent they have. Their success is measured in their ability to apply it. Coaches who have a mind set and will try to make players conform to it fail. Besides a lot of comments have been posted without any mention of Tebow.

The good news is there are plenty of other fans here who want to be excited about the coming seasons so lets just concentrate on them. I am likeing what I am reading about Sparano. he’s tough but a very positive guy. There was a nice piece on him in the Post or news the other day.

I played with some of the dumbest guys imaginable. We literally had to have index cards with the plays diagrammed on them in the huddle to get them to go in the right direction. Hey, Ted Williams was argueably the greatest hitter off all time but he was one of the worst managers ever! Knowledge and coaching ability have zippo to do with actual playing or coaching ability. Joe if u read my earlier post I stated how Jimmy Johnson and other didn’t have as much success after having succesful seasons because the teams they joined stunk as they fired there previous coach and maybe they improved the team but they did not have enough talent to win. There is no denying a coach needs talent but talent also needs good coaching to put the talent in situations to succeed and that is a known fact too Joe. Jimmy also losed his passion as he got older but everyone knows the biggest mistake the Cowboys made was get rid of Jimmy. Why is that Joe ???? Because he is a great coach Joe as he was at the U. Pete Carrol great college coach POOR NFL coach

Joe as for TOM MOORE ummmmm he never came to practice until the last what 2 games if that. He said it himself he wasn’t stepping on Shottys toes and we all know if he has been the OC from day 1 and not SHOTTY with his bonehead shifts and 3 yd hooks to Keller our Offense would have been more productive, With a injured Mangold, Slauson, Brandon Moore and with Wayne Hunter at RT we don’t know how much more because Joe Montana couldn’t be that succesful with that O LIne a mess but as i said Tom Moore was nothing to our Offense last yr it had SHOTTY written all over it

Ron I agree 100 percent with everything u said and I’m also excited for Sparano. He’s a in ur face kinda coach and our guys need that. He also wasn’t succesful as a HC at Miami due to 0 QB’s, 0 RB’s and 0 Defense. Also as i have said before and plenty others agreed except for Joe ” A lot of great Coordinators are not cut out to be Head Coach’s. Not saying Sparano is one of them but he very well could be and just having a new mind in there and not Shotty makes me very very excited to see what we can do. Joe says our style can’t win a SB but damnnn we came close twice to getting there and Shotty blew one of them. I think Stephen Hill is gonna help our vertical game too. Playaction is what suits MS best and we will see alot of it

  143. By joe on May 30, 2012 | Reply

In relation to the Jets IT DOESNT MATTER WHOS the HC or OC as its totally irrevelant in the overall goal of winning the SB The reason why its irrevelant is that theres no Qb HERE DANNY No coach or OC is going to be able to do ANYTHING to give Sanchez THE ability to compete with the TOM BRADYS of the NFL Sparano will run the ball better to help Sanchez manage the game better .Will that enable us to compete with teams that score 30 plus points a game not in a million years. The rule changes today MAKE WINNING the 80s way impossible .Rex knows this but hes in a bad situation because he and MIKE T MORGAGED everyhing on Sanchez

Joe, I agree with your point about most coaches having simular knowledge, but theres more to it than actual x’s and o’s. The ability to communicate that knowledge and get the player to buy into it is what seperates the good coaches from the average coaches. Rex has taken a defence with average talent at best and turned it into a well above average group. Now we need to find someone to do the same for our offence. Is Sparano the guy? Only time will tell?
I believe I can speak for Danny and most of the people who post on this blog that we are just fans who are hopeing this year can be successful. hey, if the 9-7 Giants can go on a run and win the Superbowl who’s to say it cant be us? this year.

  150. By danny on May 31, 2012 | Reply

See Ron what u just said about coaching not just being X’s and O’s is exactly what I explained to Joe over and over and he refused to see my pt. Great coaches have the ability to bring the best out of a player and put them in situations to suceed. As I said with Belicheck he had DB’s from the practice squad come in and play great on a few of his Superbowl runs because he brought the best out of those players and tailered his D to there strengths. See Ron u understand this because u have played the game and coached it. For someone who hasn’t played they don’t know what the difference between Coach’s is. Mangini has a great football mind but he don;t have the personality to lead a football team as there HC but guys like BB or Parcells do

  151. By danny on May 31, 2012 | Reply

Mangini coached with BB and was one of his guys so yes he knows what Bill Knows but he don;t know how to get his team to believe in it. As far as say a OC well some are better then others at calling plays in certian situations like when Shotty threw the ball on 1st, 2nd, 3rd then ran up the gut with LT for no gain in the AFC Championship game. He didn;t fool anyone but himself. Those 4 calls cost us the AFC title so a Coach is a very important piece on any level of the game. See i look at that goaline series with Shotty and say wow we score we were in the SB so no reason why we can’t get back with MS under center and in his 4th yr the yr Eli proved guys like Joe wrong and won a SB. Everyone said he stinks and should not be a NFL QB

  152. By danny on May 31, 2012 | Reply

MS was not in a good situation to improve as a QB last season. First his O line was dinged up and Wayne Hunter was downright awful. He had 2 selfish WR’s in Plax and Holmes, Plax def lost a step. Due to the poor O line play we had no running game. We had Shotty the QB killer ‘ Drew Brees, Chad Pennington”. There was no possible way MS could have improved his play last season. Well now he is in his 4th season, new WR talent, healthy O line and most of all a new OC. No reason why he can’t have a great yr. I learned as a young boy watching pro sports that the Media LOVES u when u win and ABUSES you when u lose especially in NY. I never listen to anything the media says about a player and judge them by what they say like some do

  153. By danny on May 31, 2012 | Reply

As far as competing with the Pats this same team beat them in the playoffs at the field 2 seasons ago. The Giants well we were dominating the 1st half until 3rd and long with Eli in his own end zone and he throws to Cruz who breaks 3 tackles for a 99yd score, Shotty called 58 passes that game yes 58 passes and we played poorly but still had a chance to win with under 3 min left in the game so yes we can compete with both of those teams and anyone else in the league especially with our D. Plus we added speed to our D this yr which was top 5 every yr REX coached them.

  154. By danny on May 31, 2012 | Reply

Joe our Defense is way to good to allow 30 pts a game to anyone. A few times last season Eric Smith killed us but we are improved with Mo Wilk in his 2nd yr, Maybin 2nd yr with us, Scott dropped 20lbs, I like the rookie LB Davis, I love the Rookie Coples, I hope LaRon stays healthy and Bell is solid. We already know our corners are top in the league, David Harris is one of the best inside LB’s in the NFL so yeah our D will keep us in games this yr no doubt about it and that is against the top ranked offense’s. Do u agree Ron ???

    Jets;Holmes,Keller,Ferguson,Mangold,Pouha,Harris,and Revis(7) next type B
    Giants: Snee,Bradshaw,Boley,Osi,Webster,Thomas(if healthy)Roll,and Phillips.(8) Jets B players;Hill,Moore,SanchezGreen,Wilkerson,Coples,Pace,harris,Cromartie and Landry(if healthy)(9) So lets see, giants 5 type A,8 type B’s
Jets 7 Type A’s 9 type B’s do the math Joe

Joe at the start of last season what was the odds of the Gianys winning the SB ???? The Media was ripping them apart for letting Steve Smith go to the Eagles and Kevin Boss go to the Raiders. Joe at the start of last season our NY Jets with our 4 pro bowl players were projected SB contenders. What these experts and media think means absolutely NOTHING. We def have talent on our team Joe so I don’t know what ur talking about. We have nice young Talent too

  159. By danny on Jun 3, 2012 | Reply

Ron Joe is always throwing these false facts on here. He keeps saying 3 pro bowl players on our team and 8 on Giants ????? Name me 8 pro bowl players on the Giants Joe ???? For us well Brick, Mangold, Revis, David Harris, Brandon Moore and we have a SB MVP Santonio Homes, The Giants were a 9 – 7 team who caught A LOT of breaks to win SB I mean if Garret don’t call a TO and ice his kicker and blow game the Giants don’t make playoffs. If Romo don’t over throw Miles down sideline vs Giants NO PLAYOFFS, If the Ref calls Cruz fumble against Cards NO PLAYOFFS. Now If Ted Ginn plays and rookie Wiiliams gets away from ball on Punt vs SF OUT of Playoffs. IF Welker catches easy pass Pats go up 2 scores with under 3 min left in SB. LUCKY

  160. By danny on Jun 3, 2012 | Reply

Now the Giants did capitize on all these breaks so I give them credit but they were a 9 – 7 team not some dominating team. You watch just like after there LUCKY 07 SB they stunk for yrs after til this lucky season. Next season the Giants don’t even make playoffs they finish 3rd in Div behind improved Dallas and Philly the better teams. Ron u gotta remember Joe is no wayyy a Jets fan so he just likes to throw out names thinking ppl will think he’s something BIG in the Football world but like I said tons of times just by his posts on here anyone like us Ron who played the game can tell he don’t know football.

Joey,Joey,Joey! its amazing how little thought you put into what you say! Did it ever occur to you why those other teams had so many “pro-bowlers”? I’ll give you a clue because you obviously dont have one; they won! If you win your players get to go to the pro-bowl. Hey, we didn’t get the job done last year. In my opinion it was because our g.m did a terriable job putting a very flawed team on the field. One wide reciever, no r-tackle left us unable to run the ball or throw deep. Not even the threat of a deep pass enabled the defence to key on the run and blitz the Q.B. The turnovers that ensued put the defence in an impossiable situation. Hey I admit,we stunk last year. But this is a new season and inspite of Tannenbaum we appear improved.

  166. By ron alexander on Jun 4, 2012 | Reply

Joe, Again you are correct. The N.F.L. does not go by what I say. However, if you actually took the time to objectively look at what I wrote you might actual have to agree with most of the assessments I made.Like it or not we do have a comparable amount of quality players as the Giants. Our best player Revis is at least as good as the Giants best(JPP?)Lets look posisition by posisition at wh might start if we combined the 2 teams :W.R ,NixGiants& CruzGiants& Holmes Jets tie.T.E.Keller(Jets) O.T’sFerguson-Jets &Dehl.Giants O.G’s, Snee-Giants & Moore (Jets) Center Mangold(Jets) Q.B Manning. R.B-Greene-Bradshaw-tie,F.B,Hynoski-Connor -(Tie) So we have 5 Jets,3Giants and 3 ties. Next lets look at the defences:

  167. By ron alexander on Jun 4, 2012 | Reply

Joe, Lets Compare defence: D.E”s Tuck& JPP over young Coples & Wilkerson
O.L.B’s Pace-Thomas-Maybin vs. Kiwi & Boley= Tie. I.L.B Harris Jets (no Brainer there) C.B’s Revis(Jets) over Webster,Cro(Jets)over Thomas. Safty’s- Rolle & Phillips over any one we put out there(another no brainer) So we have 4 Giants 4 Jets ans 3 ties.So out 22 starters I feel the Jets have 9 starters, the G-men have 7 and the other posisitions would be even talent wise. Now do you see my point Joe? Even if you want to argue a couple of these the point is we are not as bad as you make us out to be!

  168. By SCfromNY on Jun 4, 2012 | Reply

MOST IMPORTANT POSITION . . . QB. The Giants have Eli Manning and the Jets have 2 backup QBs. I will hope for improvement this year but I also hope to win Powerball. The other side of the argrument great players do not always translate to great teams. This is another area where excellent coaching maximize their talent.

Last years “dream team” impressed no one however as a Philly hater I think this year will be a different story.

  169. By danny on Jun 4, 2012 | Reply

Ron trust me there is no talking to Joe he is a know it all well thinks he knows it all. Ron I have said the same thing to Joe the teams that win get most of the Pro bowl picks that is basic NFL knowledge. I can’t even bother with any of this Joe stuff anymore he don’t get that we all know we had a off yr that happens to a lot of good teams. Pitt wasn’t that great last season, in 2009 AND 2010 NE lost there first playoff game at home getting pounded by the Ravens in 09 and our Jets in 2010. Wayne Hunter and Eric Smith cost us at least 2 games just by themselves so take them away and we win 10 games. We have a good football team and def just as good and I think better then 2009 and 2010. We added young speed so we have a shot.

That’s what fans do each season they get excited this could be the yr. Yes we have had plenty of let down seasons but I wouldn’t root for the Giants or Pats over my Jets I’m a die hard fan and hope we will finally see that SB real soon. I do know we got a scrappy bunch under Rex and can play with any team in the league so Joe is so way off with all his Pro Bowl players and what the other players say. Ii have to call him out cause all his negativity bashing my Jets and talking to ppl like he is a All Pro player and we are all fools. Joe don’t get it he don’t know Football and if he didn’t act like he knows everything on here and everyone else is clueless I wouldn’t say anything but since he does I LOVE calling him out when he is wrong HAHA

S.C.Joe, Excellent point,no question Eli is head and shoulders over Mark. However, Lets not forget Giants fans and even some people in the organization were ready to at least question whether he would ever be a franchise Q.B. His numbers were amazingly simular to Sanchez’s until the fourth year(isn’t this Mark’s 4th year?) when Eli and the Giants beat the crap out of Tom Brady(twice) and won their first of 2 superbowls as a group. I can
understand you not lovin the guy but I think he’s done enough to be given the opportunity to prove he is a solid starting Q.B in the league. Come on dude,back-up Q.B? How many back-ups go to two A.F.C Championship games?(espicially as rookies?

  173. By ron alexander on Jun 5, 2012 | Reply

Danny, yeah, I know Joe is a little out there but I do get a kick out of him! He’s o.k, I think he’s just fed-up with not getting over the hump and so many disappointments. Ya gotta admit, he does provide a certian amount of comic relief. And inspite of some of his outragous opinions he does occassionally make sence. But moving on to more relevent topic’s, i agree the team speed is gonna be a big plus this year. My big concern is the safty posisition? As Landry”s injury situation is a big concern and he is not known for his coverage ability anyway, and Bell is also known more for his hitting and tackling ability I have no idea how we are gonna be able to deal with Gronkowski or any of the top T.E’s we face.We cant count on rookies ?

I am convinced Ducasse is a complete bust and cant imagine him makeing the team. So if its not Hunter one of the guys they signed last week better step up. I think they passed on Elam because he is simular to Bell and Landry in that he is better against the run than the pass. As for Smith he hasn’t been the same since he got that concussion two years ago against Arizona. He seems tenative to
