Spicer, what I meant by making up stats for Sanchez was looking at his garbage time numbers — and sometimes getting those wrong, by the way — and trying to pass them off as meaningful stats. And please don’t compare my mild approval for a couple of WRs with your all-in loyalty to a #5 pick/automatic starter QB who began to look very shaky as early as his 2nd yr. But I won’t belabor the pt either, we both agree now that Sanchez most likely isn’t the guy and at the very least, if he must be on the team next yr, he should go into summer camp as just one possible starter at QB. That’s why I think Tebow should stay on IR and McElroy should start the rest of the yr, but I guess the stadium will have to be empty before Woody signs off on that…

S.C. Joe, as I just said to Ira I am not against trading Revis in the right deal. Now, that being said I dont propose we just give him away to rid ourselves of a potential contract problem. My above point was simply pointing out that his absence has contributed to the 3rd down problems we are having this year. I agree with you about the match up thing and I think Sanchez is our biggest match up nightmare as with the way he has played this year our best match up right now may be a J.V highschool team?

IRA, No I didn’t miss Randy’s point at all. frankly I thought he covered it quite well. No I was simply trying to add my thoughts after watching guys like C.Pace, B.Thomas,B.Scott& Q.Coples futility trying to catch up with opposing Q.B’s. And as for trading Revis, again, I was pointing out the problems his absence created this year. Now, if we can get a good R.T + a 1 & a 2 or 3 I would be cool with that. Of course that would be as long as Tannenbaum’s not choosing the groceries.Bye the way, I was not a fan of trading Abe or Vilma for that matter. Mangenious wanted to implement a 3-4 defence and at 6-3 250 Abe was too small to play D.E And Vilma too small at 6-1 230 to play ILB in that scheme.I didn’t agree but I wasn’t consulted?

When opponents see Bart Scott, Pace, Thomas and Harris lined up as LB’s their offensive coordinator has to be licking his chops thinking – “wow, I’ve got so many play options here, anything I call will probably work since these backers are the slowest unit in the NFL” First Down – throw short pass to the TE or RB (whoever Scott or Pace is covering) Second down- run left, right or up the middle on this team, cause they can’t get off our Oline blocks to make a tackle. Third Down – Find out who Cromartie is covering and throw it ANYWHERE else, tell QB to take his time, no pressure to be concerned about.

Tom 64, I never made up anything the stats are what they are. If I did make them up do you not think for 1 second someone on this site would not have called me out of them? Also his stats from his other years are not what matters what matters are 1 his stats from this year 2 his not imporving on his prior years stats & 3 him making the same mistakes that he did as a rookie. mistakes that he should no longer be making. Since you want to go that route & not drop it I will as well. How did David Clowney work out for you? How did Derrick “stone hands” Mason who we traded for a conditional 7th round pick. First Joe: I admit to being a very big fan of Pennington. His arm was not the problem, injuries to a shoulder that never completely healed kept him from being elite. Look at the first year after a shoulder injuriy when he took Maimi from 1-15 to the AFCE titile. With Sporano as coach. He did not have a rocket arm. Something everyone accused Montana of. How did that work out. Your WR can not achieve greatness without a QB to throw to him. Pennington threw successfully to Moss. A healthy shoulder and the Jets would have a SB win by Pennington.

Question is, do “players” who have played the game since high school for the most part really need to be schooled on the basics of this game? If they do, they should not be on an NFL roster. For those down on McElroy, why not wait until he’s given a chance. Weak arm? That’s what they said about Joe Montana. Let’s not forget that we were in love with Chad Pennington when he got to start, even with his weak arm because he managed the game & was smart & ACCURATE. Nobody had a problem with him until he hurt that shoulder & was never the same. He even had that one last good year at Miami when they won the Division. McElroy can play this game. If you watched Alabama you know he’s like a Montana or a Pennington. Randy Moss raved about Chad when they were teammates at Marshall. Julio Jones raved about McElroy. Rcvrs know who can play & who can’t. Nobody’s raving about Sanchez. Nobody ever will.

Ongoing evidence of what a terrible job Rex and his staff have done: These annual clinics on fundamentals like fumbling that are held during the season. Reminds me of the hurried attempt a few yrs ago to teach Sanchez how to slide, something he should’ve learned no later than high school. As Al famously said in AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, “There’s something really wrong here” when you gotta refresh your team on the basics in early December. That’s when good teams are starting to play their best ball and looking ahead at who they have to beat to get to the big one, not looking back at stuff they’ve been doing wrong all yr.

This is from a Gil Brandt column in which he lists ten failings that will keep Tebow from ever becoming a decent NFL QB, but this passage on accuracy would seem to pertain to the guy ahead of him just as much: “ACCURACY: Tom Landry had a theory that accuracy cannot be improved. Whenever people would challenge him on that, he’d ask them to show him someone who became more accurate over the course of their career; they’d usually find none. The odd thing with Tebow is that he seems to have gotten worse, at least since his time at Florida, where he completed 66.4 percent of his passes.” Yeah, well, completing passes in the NFL isn’t like doing it in college, as Sanchez keeps finding out…

What this FO seems to be doing is making changes at the bottom of the roster simply to appease the fan base and tell them, “look, we are doing all we can do to improve this roster” but in reality most of the time, those at the bottom of the roster are not even active on game day, THEN, they are replaced by other bottom dwellers the following week. Ron/Ira, what it really all comes down to is “match ups” Example.. The Giants match up great against NE simply because their strength (their front 4 and their ability to get pressure up the middle) is NEs major weakness, An elite CB will not do you much good if an elite QB has 10 seconds or more to look for an open receiver.Heck, 2 “elite CBs may not do you much good under those same circumstances. You are right Ira, if you can somehow obtain that elite QB, or that elite pass rusher for a package including Revis, it is a no brainer!

Gary, The Jets are hurting at WR and Kerely is hurt. Gilyard might be a shot in the dark but they need WR’s now. Gilyard did play well vs the Jets in the preseason with 5 catches for 71 yds which included a 31 yd TD.

Simms had the best pure arm in training camp. Don’t know if he can really play or not but he can throw. As for McElroy no way did they punish him for the season. Thats nonsense they would cut him instead. Maybe Tebow is hurt really bad and will not play the rest of the year and they will make McElroy the #2 and have Simms on the PS and can make him the #3 if they sit Tebow for the rest of the year or a few weeks.

Yes, Ira, you’ve been for the Revis trade longer than just about anyone, myself included, and I agree, for the Jets to obsess on him now is like a guy who won’t sell his Ferrari when he can’t feed his wife and kids. Nice post, JR, one of the reasons I think Rex could be fired a few days after the end of the season is because he seems oblivious to the obvious, like the way folks are losing interest in this entire edition of the team. Guys like that are also usually shocked when they’re let go. When both Karan and MJV are simply declaring the team a disaster and asking for big changes, the fat lady has sung!

I hope the Jets lose all the rest of their games so they can finally get quality players in the draft because the SOJ teams are mediocre and there isn’t enough time in life to root for mediocre SOJ teams. It’s more fun to root for teams who have a hope of accomplishing something. I’m disappointed you won’t eve give Greg McElroy a chance. He has earned at least an opportunity. He won the high school state championship in TX where he went unmdefeated. He won the national championship with Alabama in a year where he went undefeated. Mangold nothing personal but the Jets were just fine with Mawae and Goodwin in the waiting. Getting rid of Mawae was on Mangini he didn’t want a locker room lawyer in house. Sure fans will say Abe got hurt too much well he goes to Atl and is in his 7th season now and besides missing 8 games his 1st year has missed only 2 after that. Think the 67.5 sacks Big Abe has up until now they could’ve used. I know the Jets would’ve gone to the SB in 09 or 10 if they had him. This was a mistake that has haunted them for 7 years and they are still searching for a pass rusher ever since.

Ron, Sure you have to pressure the QB and the Jets are on pace to having their fewest amount of sacks for a season since 1978. But you are missing Randy’s very valid point if you give up a lot of yards on 1st and 2nd downs then the chances of stopping them are less. Its been an all around breakdown in all three phases of the team this year.
Getting to Revis i have said it for awhile now while it probably won’t be the popular thing to do the Jets need to trade him this spring if they can or at least before the trade deadline in Oct 2013. What trade Revis? Yes thats the smart thing to do. This team needs too much to invest a ton of money in a CB who will be 28 or 29 and with Cro stepping up and having 2 yrs left on a very manageable
