We’ve heard Rex Ryan say more than a few times that the Jets are about the decal on the helmet, not the name on the jersey, and the team concept will be tested today at Buffalo.
The Jets’ inactive list contains four players whose injuries didn’t come around this past week of practice and rehab.
One of the names on the list was stated early in the week as Ryan said Darrelle Revis would rest his hamstring pull for another week. The news today is that Drew Coleman has been named as the starter at Revis’ cornerback spot opposite Antonio Cromartie.
Coleman’s start had been speculated by Ryan and others during the week, but rookie Kyle Wilson got the nod for Revis last week at Miami. Today Coleman has been named, with Wilson moving back to the role that was sketched out for him when he was drafted out of Boise State as the nickel corner.
For Coleman, it will be the sixth start of his career. He made four starts in his rookie season of 2006 and got No. 5 last year at New England when the Jets, no surprise, opened in their nickel against Tom Brady and the Patriots’ three-WR alignment.
The other starting switch also is not unexpected, although Calvin Pace was thought to be along enough from his broken foot of a month ago that he might at least be available for spot duty against the Bills. But Pace, listed as questionable for the game, was a late scratch Saturday and didn’t accompany the team to western New York.
The other injured players out of today’s game are LB Jamaal Westerman (ankle) and OL Wayne Hunter (shin).
The Jets’ inactive list also includes TE Jeff Cumberland, WR Patrick Turner and DT Marcus Dixon. Kellen Clemens is listed as the third quarterback.
They say about the weather in Buffalo, if you don’t like it now, stick around five minutes and it’ll change. Such is the case this morning.
At dawn the temperature was in the 40s and some healthy winds were whipping through the canyons of downtown Buffalo. The winds died down but a steady rain started falling and continued as the team buses made their way to Orchard Park and Ralph Wilson Stadium.
But now the rain has stopped and it’s overcast and breezy, a typical October day in Buffalo. The lights are on at The Ralph to help with the visibility. According to accuweather.com, the temperature is expected to rise into the low 50s for the game and rain isn’t expected to return until later in the afternoon. But be ready for anything.
Bills Flip Card
On the Buffalo IA list are CB Terence McGee, S Cary Harris, LB Andra Davis, T Jamon Meredith, T Ed Wang, DE John McCargo and DE Marcus Stroud. Levi Brown has been designated the Bills’ third QB.
Thus the Bills have announced two starting lineup changes: Leodis McKelvin for McGee at CB and Akin Ayodele for Davis at MLB.
The Jets are in their white jerseys and white pants for the fourth straight game this season. In fact it’s the 10th time in the last 12 regular- and postseason games the Jets have worn their tidy whities. And their record in all white has been all right: 7-2 beginning with last year’s road game against the Bills in Toronto.
Today’s ref is Bill Leavy. He presided over his first Jets game in 2001, the 13-12 win at Carolina, a.k.a. “the Shrek Game.” He’s also worked two Green & White playoff games, the 2004 loss at Pittsburgh and last season’s wild-card win at Cincinnati.
Today’s Schedule on newyorkjets.com
Eric Allen and Nick Gallo will again moderate the CoveritLive chat on newyorkjets.com. Also, if you’re so inclined, listen to the 1050 ESPN Radio feed of the game, Bob Wischusen and Marty Lyons in the booth, which is available on our Website.
I’ll become a Twitter-ing machine from now through the end of the game, with my tweets appearing on http://twitter.com/nyjets and on the CoveritLive chat. My game story will be available on the site shortly after the end of the game, with a “writethrough” version with postgame quotes available after we return to the North Jersey area. EA will have his postgame blog and Nick will check in with a sidebar. Then we’ll start all over again Monday as the hype begins for the Jets’ next Monday night game and Brett Favre’s return to his former home office for a year as the leader of the Vikes.
